Copper coil - possibly a stupid question but..

does anyone know, can you actually conceive whilst on the copper coil? Is the idea of it that the pregnancy is just not viable due to the coil being in the womb lining?

I've had really strong pregnancy symptoms this month (nausea, tender breasts, spots etc) followed by a heavier period than usual, and wondered if it was actually a very early miscarriage.

All fine now, and I'm sure I'm not pg, but just wondered if this was common.

Yes it is possible - the coil prevents implantation not conception. My Goddaughter is a coil baby!

Given that the copper coil doesn't prevent the release of an egg it is possible that an egg will get fertilised, though it is unlikely to implant as the womb lining is disrupted. I'm not sure how the lining is disrupted so a fertilised egg may implant and then be miscarried.

I have a younger sister as a result of a copper coil failure though, so I'd say it's entirely possible to have a viable pregnancy whilst using it.

yes it is possible but usually only if it has been badly fitted.Coils are actually used as post-coital emergency within 5 days of sex so they work well in stopping a potential pregnancy.I would get it checked-which you should do anyway

Yes you can, but it's rare as long as the coil is fitted properly and hasn't fallen out. When I had mine fitted, my GP told me that it's as effective as sterilisation.
