his VAD has come to the end of its working life, so they need to place the big box machine whihc powers the pump. when he phoned and said it i thought he was getting a transplant, i felt elated, but unfortunatly not. new machine will be set up, which means for a few minutes his heart wont be pumping. ek!!

the spare machine has to be set to the same flow rates as his current machine to keep his heart pumping at the correct pace, not speed it up or slow it down at all. they switched the machine on and it wasnt giving a reading they wanted, so they have gone away, the machine may need resetting/reprogramming. the machine he is on is stable atm, its been in use since july, they say 6months for each one but he isnt at 6months yet, but it has been playing up lately, so needs replacing. hopefully it will be done asap, over the weekend or monday. we always have the manual pump if it does fail.

LadyTophamHatt · 18/11/2005 18:45

A manual pump?/
Is that easy for Peter?

(i doubt any of it is easy but I hope YKWIM)

edam · 18/11/2005 18:49

Wow Misdee it doesn't get any easier, does it? Hope it goes OK.

misdee · 18/11/2005 18:49

he wont do it, someone else has to. around 70pumps per minute. easier to do it with your foot.

What a responsiblity!

ThomCat · 18/11/2005 20:06

Do you get a metronome or something to keep the time with if you have to pump? Hope it gets sorted quickly this weekend. Thinking of you both.
