any advice please?

Hi there, I am new to Mumsnet and just wondered if anyone could help me or has been in a similar situation.
Ive been suffering with gynea problems for the past 5 years (I am 25) I had a Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy a few year ago and then my left ovary removed. Fast forward to now and after having an internal scan (extremely painful for me) last Friday was told that I have a 4cm cyst on my right ovary. The consultant said she would keep an eye on it and see me again in 3weeks. I then recieved a phone call from her on Saturday (apparently she doesnt even work weekends) saying that she has been having a closer look at the can and is concerned as she ould not see "the blood flow" properly. So would I come in on Tuesday for an urgent MRI scan. I phoned her secretary on Monday asking if she could tell me what time I would need to be there and she said that she was shocked that the consultant thought that I would be having it the next day as "even cancer patients have to wait for two weeks on the waiting list", anyway I got a phone call Tuesday morning asking me to come in later on that afternoon.I agreed and had the scan done this Tuesday just gone. I phoned up yesterday to see if my results were back and the secretary said that my consultant was at a conference in Warwick but had specifically phoned to ask her if my MRI results were in yet and to give her a call as soon as they were back on screen (even though she is in Warwick).
To be honest I have feltthat something isnt right for quite a while and have all the symptoms of Ovarian cancer. I know it is not that common for women of my age but i have been extremely unlucky healthwise in the past.
Has anyone else been ordered an emergency MRI after finding a cyst and is there any advice anyone can offer while I am waiting for my results as the not knowing is making me quite frightened?

You poor thing, not wonder you are worried. I have not been in exactly the same situation but I have had an emergency MRI for what turned out to be an abscess, that was what they thought it was and is considered an emergency - it isn't just cancer that gets seen straight away, I'm sure there are a host of things.

There is also a degree of consultants playing the system when it comes to MRIs. There are only inpatient and outpatient categories, with the former being seen pretty much straight away and the latter waiting weeks. The change in your wait is probably more to do with your consultant taking control and pushing on with what she wants. I have officially been an inpatient, but out on pass, so I got treated as urgent and it is possible you got seen so quickly as the doctor just made such a technical change - it doesn't mean they became more worried (just looks that way).

It does sound like your doctor is a good person to have in your corner and will do everything she can for you whatever the outcome of these tests. I hope the results are reassuring and you start to get better soon, I don't have any real advice other than not googling symptoms, but it is completely normal to be so scared, good luck.

I know what you mean about googling symptoms it seems to be the worst thing to do!
I think it is the urgency that makes me worry as for the past 5 years it has all been a waiting game, perhaps you are right and it is just my consultant wanting to get to the bottom of it. Its only been 3 days since the MRI and i feel like its 3 weeks!
as long as i know, at least then i can get my head straight rather than thinking of all the possibilities.
just a question, when you had your MRI how long did it take to get the results? as i dont know whether it takes longer if there is something sinister to look at or its good news the longer it takes as they have to be thorough?

Oh I'm fine, it was a small thing really - I was just hoping to reassure you that small things can be treated quickly as well, especially after what the receptionist said implying that cancer is the most urgent thing they see.

I had the results about 2 days later but I was booked in for surgery then, the MRI was pre-surgical to see what they were dealing with, more than diagnostic in itself. However my dad recently had an MRI for suspected liver cancer (which wasn't, thankfully) and there was a week between the MRI and the follow up appointment for results. In his case, the MRI just changed the risk from high to low and they still needed to do a biopsy afterwards. Perhaps the delay comes from deciding what to do next and setting it up, not how much they need to study the images? I wish I had more answers, and reassurance, sorry, but perhaps there is no set rule and it differs by hospital and doctor. I don't think there is any harm in chasing the results up, especially if the option is waiting over the whole weekend. Good luck.

Yes hopefully you're right and they are just deciding what to do next. When I phoned yesterday the receptionist said that it was till showing as "restricted" so the results werent available for the consultant to view yet (although she said even if they were back that she could not tell me as she has no idea how to interpret them). I might phone again today actually and just say that I'm really worried then see what she says. As my consultant isnt back until Monday then I know to worry if she rings me from being away! Anyway fingers crossed but tbh Im pretty sure its not good news, Ive got that feeling in the pit of my stomach and Ive been right before!

Sorry ive not checked mn for a few days. Yes I got the results, apparently they cant tell if it is cancerous or not so I have had the CA125 blood test yesterday and am going in for an op next weds to remove the cyst and apparently my remaining ovary is stuck to the back of my uterus and they are going to see if they can detach it as it has fallen backwards (hopefully that is where the pain is coming from and the cyst is not the issue!). Should know more after Weds I would think then i'll have the blood results and the cyst will go for testing so fingers crossed. Its all moving a bit quick though- yet more surgery! hopefully this will be the last!!
