Hi All,

I got a copper coil fitted last night (the TT380 Slimline)- my goodness the pain was awful! I have tried all other contraceptives, but had problems with all hormonal options (weight gain etc) so the doctor advised the coil. The doctor said it would be have around the same effectiveness as the pill, Yasmin, that I was taking, however on researching the Copper Coil it seems to have quite a high failure rate, can anyone out my rest (or otherwise) I need a reliable from of contraception...(I am 31 with no kids)

Thanks x

I don't know the actual statistics, but my GP told me my copper coil is as effective as being sterilised. I'm pretty sure she said it was over 99% effective.

Did you not get given an information leaflet when they put it in? I know i did (no idea where it is now though!)

P.S it hurts less once you've had children Smile

Thanks for your post- really helpful. I think I am just really paranoid, as I dont know anyone that has had the coil- and Ive read to many horror stories on the net.

I did get a leaflet, think I need to read it properly.. :-)

I've has a coil for about 8 years now (first one was a 5 year one, now is a 10 year one) No problems / scares for me. In fact, it's been great not to have to think about contraception or deal with the ill effects of hormones (well, apart from my own ones :) )

I think it's great. I can't use chemical contraception, and once it's there it's there. Of course contraception can go wrong. Nothing is 100% apart from the obvious! I have read on here that i't advisable to get it fitted at FAmily Planning as they do so many. Also to take a paracetemol or whatever painkiller before you have it done.
