Fed up. Tonsillitis came back after finishing antibiotics.

I posted a couple of weeks ago about having tonsillitis and eventually saw my GP and got ABs. Within a day or so of taking them, I was much better. Took the seven day course which finished last Sunday. By Tuesday this week my sore throat was back and by yesterday I was starting to feel unwell again.

I called GP and he gave me another course of the same ABS, but this time I'm taking a double dose!

Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice would be great.

Also, I was surprised GP gave me the same ABs again (even though they did clear the infection whilst I ws on them).

If you get tonsilitus frequently (as in 3 or more times a year) I'd seek to have them removed.

I don't really get it regularly, although I did have exactly the same thing this time last year, same sore throat and ill feeling which went with ABs then returned shortly after. It cleared in the end.

You should have had a swab. the GP probably gave you an antibiotics to which the bacteria is semi-resistant. You get a bit better and when you stop it, they grow back again.
Upping the dose might not be enough, you will need an other kind of antibiotic.
GO see another GP after asking the nurse for a swab and an antibiogram.

Ooops sorry DD2 posted before I checked and had her own comment.

This happened to a friend of mine recently. Her GP gave her stronger ab's for 10 days the second time and it cleared up. I wonder if there's a strain going round that is super strong?

Thanks. I'm hoping that the double dose of ABs will sort it out. Dreading the thrush though :(
