Coil Query

My friend has had a coil fitted for about 8 years (since the birth of her youngest). Not many weeks go by without her suffering from a chest infection/pleurisy, or a bad cold or sickness etc. She feels tearful quite often understandably. She had heart surgery when she was 6 (28 years ago) and needs prophelactic anti-biotics when she has dental work etc.

First query - should she even have the coil?
Second query - can it make her feel this crap?

Is it okay to leave a coil in for this length of time? I thought it had to be changed every 5 years?
