Mastitis at 50? WTF!

The dr has just informed me that I have mastitis. Feel dreadful, breasts are agony and large red patch on one of them. It is 8 years since I fed anyone so this seems deeply weird to me and somehow embarassing to tell work colleagues.
Has anone else had this charming illness in later life?

No, but have heard it happen! Poor you. Equally, if antibiotics don't clear it up fast, go back to GP - not to worry you, because very very unlikely, but other breast diseases can look like mastitis occasionally. Though feeling dreadful and both breasts hurting sounds utterly mastitisy to me!

My mum had it many years after finishing breastfeeding. They did extensive scans etc as it's unusual 20 years after breastfeeding. They found nothing unusual.

Thanks Elibean and DeWe. I am going back to the GP on Thursday. Just feel weird having a young mother's condition in my middleaged body!

Hmm... GP thinks it is "weird" and is sending me to a specialist first thing tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed that the specialist laughs me out of her office! ( slightly anxious and edgey emoticon)
