milk in boobs???? pg? not pg?

So Ive had milk in my boobs the last 2-3 months, Ive had the copper coil since July '10 Urine test says negative, had blood test and doc recons all hormone levels and hcg is normal. I have had periods but last month was spotting for like 10 days, then I had another 4-5 days but some days was quite heavy. Im being sent to a breast specialist, he says he only sees 1 person a year maybe with this problem. Ive been proper moody and hormonal, Ive felt sick-not actually been sick. Feel a bit woozy down there! But dont know if this is just now the idea is in my head?! Has anyone else heard of this?

my sister had this - has a benign tumour on her pituitary gland, called a prolactinoma. Apparently v v. common - anywhere from 16-30% of people have them and they can cause all sorts of symptoms incl. lactation. She takes tablets every day to manage the problem. More info here

My son had a prolactinoma - no milk but he did lose most of his body hair - please get it checked out as if the prolactinoma presses on the optic nerve it can cause blindness.

do you already have children? i know people who can still produce milk if they squeeze, several years after their last child!
is it a lot of milk? how did you notice?

I had the milk thing both before and since having dc.
I had blood tests and mammogram which ruled out any nasties. Was told that in my case it wasn't a symton of anything awful and to just live with it.

Excess prolactin levels can cause the problems described and this often interferes with ovulation. Tablets (bromocriptine) can be taken to counteract this.

Ive had all tests for being pregnant and hormone levels and prolactin, everything normal so they say, im waiting to be referred to breast clinic, suppose they will do mammogram.

I noticed originally cos my nipples were really sore and burning so while I was prodding to see whats wrong it came out.

Ive no children, never been pregnant. I could swear I feel pregnant, food cravings, been feelin sick and my sense of smell is amazing!! would put spiderman to shame lol.

I did 2 urine tests before negative, and also negative blood tests for it too

I don't know what you 'have' but I think I have it too :)

Hi I have had hypothyroidism for 11 years but 4 weeks ago my dose of levothyroxine had to be increased suddenly after blood tests should I was out of "normal range". I have also had "pregnancy" type symptoms for a couple of months although I have Mirena coil and my youngest is 13yrs old (got quite panicky there for a moment as I'm 42 and not really up for having any more babies!!) I have even taken a pregnancy test - negative. I have felt nauseous and been producing breast milk and also very very tired and dizzy with blurred vision. The symptoms have now got so bad I am off work and cannot drive as my concentration is horrendous and I am doing really stupid things! I need to lie down and rest in the afternoons. My doctor sent me for an urgent optician appt this week and the tests were alarming with rapid deterioration in one eye, I have also had blood tests for increased prolactin levels and CRP (an indicator for infection/inflammation) I hope to get the results on Monday but am quite worried and really want to feel better soon so I can go back to work. Its a very difficult condition to try and explain to your boss! :/

Don't suppose you are on anti-depressants? Mine made me produce even more milk & the GP said it's a v rare side affect that can cause people who aren't lactating to start

yes I was on Fluoxetine for one month but haven't been taking it for a while. It was after stopping that my thyroid levels did start to become unstable and I did wonder about them. Trouble is I don't appear to be getting better even though the anti-depressants are well and truly out of my system. I actually went to the doctor as I was troubled by my increasing weight and low libido etc so think the problem had started then but he just prescribed anti-depressants, I stopped them because I didn't think that was the issue!
