I have a lump in my neck and it feels like it's hot.

What do you think? I've been to the docs and he says it's probably a cyst, but isn't investigating further. Should I just leave it or try and get a second opinion?

get a second opinion. I have a lump in my neck but as I also have overactive thyroid I asked my GP. He said nothing to do with thyroid (which I agree as this lump starts from under the chin) he said it was probably muscle!
On visit to thyroid consultant I asked what this lump was, he was very dismissive, but when I insisted "what is it" he said he didn't know but was sure it wasn't much. Needless to say I was insistant he refer me to someone who would know and he did refer me to ENT. My appointment is on Thurs and am still worried sick. It is your right to get someone to tell you what it is exactly without being dismissive of your concerns. Go back to GP and ask what sort of cyst, when will it go, and all those other questions you've got.

Thank you nanatothree, I also am worried sick and felt really dismissed. Have booked an appt with another doctor, hopefully will get referred.

If it's hot it may just been a swollen gland as the result of an infection or a bite on the head.

But yes go back. Particularly if you now have additional symptoms. As well as the lump feeling hot do you have pyrexia or any other issues?

Sounds like an inflamed gland/infection. Good for you that you've booked a further appointment. Try not to worry although that's easier said than done I know.
