Lump/enlarged Lymph Node

GinaFB · 12/05/2011 21:35

Can anyone share any experiences of a single enlarged lymph node in their neck?

I found a lump on Monday.

Dr sent me for blood tests but no results yet and I'm very frightened as he wasn't very reassuring.

Have just had this myself. It was enlarged for two months so went to dr's and also had bloods done which all came back fine. It has finally gone down but was enlarged for nearly five months in the end.

Don't google i did and just got myself in a right state (I also started a thread at the time)

winnybella · 12/05/2011 21:39

How big is it?

GinaFB · 12/05/2011 21:41

Yes I made that mistake..... :( i am in a bit of a panic now to be honest.

Did you get referred to have it scanned?

It's about the size of a small olive Winny

No the blood tests were clear so the dr didn't think it was necessary to refer for a scan at the time but she told me if I was really worried to come back and she weould make a referall. As I said it's been a few months since the blodd test and it has now gone down but have no idea why it was enlarged for so long.

The dr was very kind though and told me that she had an enlarged node that had been that way for years and some people are just prone to it.

If I remember rightly they usually have to be quite large (3 cm's) before they become to concerned.

Make sure you are constantly feeling it or prodding it about (hard i know!) as that can actually make them more swollen and cause you more worry.

winnybella · 12/05/2011 21:50

Hmm. I could always feel the nosdes in my neck and in my armpits-some are like an oval peas, some a bit larger. Some stay the same size, some get bigger (because of an infection or shaving or just because Confused).

I would definitely not panic. How long did you have it for? AFAIK with leukemia etc they enlarge quickly and in a very dramatic fashion.

Really, could be anything- could be literally that you have scratched your gum with your toothbrush or something.

Also, I think anything up to 1cm is totally fine-unless it's got a strange shape? What did the doctor say?

ConnorTraceptive · 12/05/2011 21:51

Make sure you are NOT constanly feeling it prodding it (doh!)

ConnorTraceptive · 12/05/2011 21:52

Is it moveable when you touch it? Also does it feel like a smooth regular shape?

winnybella · 12/05/2011 21:55

Oh, sorry, I see that you said in your OP that you found it on Monday. Where on your neck is it?

Glad that it turned out to be nothing, Connor- I think I was on your thread.

ConnorTraceptive · 12/05/2011 21:57

Yes I think you were winny Smile thanks again for calming me down at the time!

believe me OP i was in a right old state!

frankie3 · 12/05/2011 22:06

I had this last year and I ended up having a ct scan that showed it was nothing. The Dr then did a blood test that showed that I had gladular fever in the past that had caused this. I didn't know that I had had gladular fever in the past, or that it could cause this . So try not to worry too much.

GinaFB · 12/05/2011 22:07

I'm in a bit of a flap but trying not to worry my OH if you see what I mean!!

It's a smooth lump and it feels almost rubbery and moves slightly. It's on the LHS of my neck about 1.5 inches above my collar bone.

It appeared very suddenly, I do feel a bit run down. Have a 4 month old who is reducing my sleep so maybe it's just that.

The Dr kept asking about night sweats (about 5 times) which I found disconcerting.

Smooth and moveable is a good sign from what I was told. I got asked about night sweats too.

GinaFB · 12/05/2011 22:15

Thank you all for replying I've been in a very negative state of mind the last few days and it's good to know people know how I'm feeling AND it's likely to be nothing!

OP posts:
winnybella · 12/05/2011 22:40

Yes, night sweats could be a symptom of leukemia.
Where you say you found the node-that's a normal place fr them to be, both sides, a couple or more on each side-some can be larger, some tiny.
Doctor's just doing his job, but I wouldn't worry too much.

GinaFB · 12/05/2011 23:01

Yes he was confronted with a frightened woman early on Tues Morning!

I was more worried that it was only one that was up. The Dr can't feel any others.

I had one about 7 years ago. I had a blood test and the lymph nodes in the right had side of my neck removed or a biopsy int the day surgery. They were fine. Sometimes they can blow up if your ill and get stuck at that size. You can have them removed for piece of mid if the blood test is fine. Sometimes a one in the left side feels a bit enlarged.

GinaFB · 15/05/2011 21:27

Just wanted to say thanks to all who replied to me here. I found it incredibly reassuring to read your posts. I finally relaxed and had a reasonable sleep.

Blood tests have come back and Dr has said he's happy its nothing serious although something else has been flagged but it's nothing related, nor anything to be concerned about. Much relief all round. Lump is still there, planning to name it Bob and hope that he decides to go away soon!!

OP posts:
ConnorTraceptive · 16/05/2011 16:31

Glad your results camer back fine. Coincidently mine flagged up low iron. Hopefully "Bob" will quietly disapear!
