A very close friend has asked me to be on her sided during the surgery.
What can I expect? Is this procedure generally safe?

I doubt that they will let you into the theatre to be very honest. It's a safe procedure but they will use x-rays so there's a radiation risk as well as everything else, there's also a bit of blood and sawing. She should be under a general anaesthetic so would be asleep anyway though wouldn't she?
