what is the difference between a humidifier and a vicks steamer?

DD has a bad cough and I am trying out a humidifier - should be steaming her bedroom instead? What is the difference between a humidifier and a steamer?

Had the same problem with DS's cough - was putting bowls of hot water with Vicks in in his room at night to help. Mentioned this to paediatrician, who said that actually cool damp air is more effective with coughs than warm damp air - apparently the warmth causes the passages to swell more, and therefore become more congested. Or something along those lines, but slightly more technical....

Saying that, not sure how humidifiers work - do they involve steam?

The humidifier doesnt seeem to be releasing steam...so maybe that supports the theory re cold air vs hot air...not sure though..

You can get humidifiers that will either warm or cool the air. Some even allow for oils to be added for vaporisation. I'd go for one that could do either.

thanks - I am using the "viva coolmist ultrasonic humidifier" - do you know why humidifiers are supposed to help? praying not to have another night of no sleep, esp as due with 2nd baby next week!

A really effective treatment for croup is sitting child in a hot steamy bathroom with the shower on hot at full pelt. Hence sometimes a hot water humidifier can be good, maybe depends on the type of cough. We bought one for ds last winter (had had loads of bother with croup) and it seemed to help. Have to be careful with cleaning them though hot water humidifiers=infection risk if not kept properly clean. Whether it's hot or cold water affects the particle size of the vapour ie hot water, smaller particles more effective I think.
