last week I suddenly felt a pain in my calf and then found it painful to walk for a few hours.
Today while running like a loon round an agility course with my dog exercising, I actually felt a 'pop' in my calf a shooting pain and now it really hurts. I can just about walk if I walk on tiptoe!
I am sure if there had been anyone nearby when i was taking my 'exercise' that they would have heard it go 'pop'

what could I have done?

Achilles Tendon?

QuintessentialPains · 09/05/2011 17:23

erm, doctor?

I fear bloodcloth

BornAgainBitch · 09/05/2011 17:25

Is it red? If so, I would go straight to A&E as it could be a DVT. Actually, I think I'd go anyway to get it checked out.

Torn your achilles tendon?

fruitshootsandheaves · 09/05/2011 17:32

it isn't red there is no outward sign that there is anything wrong.

I think it's too high for the achilles, not that I'm an expert!
it's just at the bottom of my calf muscle about 1/3 way up my lower leg.

I used to have problems with my achilles.

Check out this website - shows you exactly where it is. It's quite a long tendon....

Your Achilles attaches to your calf and is notorious for generating a popping sound when it is ruptured....I'd see a Doctor.

BarbaraBar · 09/05/2011 17:36

This is interesting.....

" Achilles tendon rupture is a partial or complete tear of the Achilles tendon. It comes on suddenly, sometimes with a popping sound, and is debilitating. "

fruitshootsandheaves · 09/05/2011 17:39

Ahh yes that sounds exactly right....bugger

thanks everyone

While you're waiting to go

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Get it cold, get it wrapped, get it up. Walk on it as little as possible until you know what you have done. They will probably do a multi-layer support bandage and put you on crutches for a couple of weeks to let it rest

fruitshootsandheaves · 09/05/2011 18:56

been to the doctor, got the last emergency appt of the day (or I would have had to wait till next Wednesday!)

He also said to rest ice...etc etc

I've got one of those tubigrip things on that I found at the back of the cupboard I had in my medicine box

not going to be easy to completely rest it though

sigh

thanks all Grin

Did he recommend any further treatment? How about crutches?

Might be worth trying to see a physio when it begins to heal.

I hope it's on the mend very very soon OP. I am a v keen runner and the thought of any injury (let alone an achilles tendon injury) scares me witless!
