Sorry if this sounds gross. DP went to toilet tonight and called me in, I looked down the toilet and there was so much blood it was like he had been slit open or something, it was horrible and so scary!!! He said its happened before in fact about once a fortnight but said tonight it was the worst. Then he had to lay down because he felt lightheaded and weak!!! I am so worried about him. I want to make him an appointment at GP but said he will see how he goes!!! He is only 35, surely it can't be bowel cancer. He says he has no pain and have looked it up and its scaring me now.

oh my goodness.... I would take him to a&e! if he lost so much that he felt lightheaded then there is something wrong!

starlover · 07/11/2005 22:48

btw, don't want to scare you but anyone can suffer from bowel cancer,.

it's really important that he sees someone soon

crazydazy · 07/11/2005 22:49

I know, he went really pale too!!! He told me it happened a few years ago and they did all the tests at the hospital and found nothing, thats probably why he is not as worried as I am. He's been so run down lately, he doesn't sleep well....am just so worried

OP posts:
starlover · 07/11/2005 22:51

well he obviousl wants something done, otherwise he wouldn't have shown you.
I do think it's important to get it checked out... there are loads of other reasons for bleeding, it probabnly isn't cancer.
But think of it this way.... it COULD be, and if it is then it needs treating NOW

crazydazy · 07/11/2005 22:51

I've been looking at bowel cancer over the internet and he has the signs, he's gone to bed now but I am really out of my mind with worry!!! I remember it happening about 6 months ago and he told me, surely if it was cancer something bad would have happened by now?

Thanks again

Crazy - Docs are much more worried by very dark blood, rather than bright red blood which would point to bleeding due to strain in the rectum region.

Feistybird · 07/11/2005 22:55

obviously still needs to be checked tho.

starlover · 07/11/2005 22:55

look up piles! they have the same symptoms!

SleepyJess · 07/11/2005 22:58

And a burst... something or other.. God I DO know this but am knackered and can't remember what it is.. but it causes a LOT of bright red blood and is not serious..!

Hope he's ok CD.. ler us know

Crazydazy, I know it's hard not to be scared when you see something like that but it's just as likely to be piles. I know it probably looks like alot of blood but they can bleed and awful lot. I once looked after an old man who had them and he was beside himself with worry, but it turned out to be piles. Try not to worry. Easier said than done I know, but i'm sure it'll be fine.

starshaker · 07/11/2005 23:01

ths happened to me while i was pg went to toilet and there was loads of blood was really scared and was taken straight up to hospital even though i knew it was coming from my bot the docs just wanted to check it over and it was just a pile that had burst. hope hes ok

beckybrastraps · 07/11/2005 23:22

Obviously, he should see a doctor tomorrow, but I would also echo what has been said about piles. You can get a shockingly large amount of blood from them. And looking at it can definitely make you feel a little odd. My fingers are crossed.

jalopy · 08/11/2005 08:22

crazydazy, definitely get him to see a G.P. It might be internal piles that are bleeding quite high up his rectum. Encourage him to get it checked.

crazydazy · 08/11/2005 09:11

Thanks everyone have made him an appointment for the GP this morning, made him stay off work so he could attend it was muttering about how we need the money, xmas etc so I just said "I can do without the money but I can't do without you", it seemed to work as he stayed home

I am quite relieved that you all seem to think its piles, he has since told me it happens quite regular and has been to the GP before and he believed it was piles too but DP was worried as he had no pain at all and they say with cancer there is no pain!!!! Anyway will keep you all updated - I keep ringing him up saying "don't forget to tell him this" and "don't forget to tell him that" - he says I am neurotic but I know what he's like he will just brush it off, I should have gone with him but I am at work!!!

Well he's been to the doctor and the GP doesn't seem to think its anything like cancer, he couldn't feel any lumps etc, thank god for that!!!! He said he thinks he has a vein up inside which keeps bursting which is what is causing the blood!!! He is also slightly anaemic and so needs a blood test but the Doctor said if he lost as much blood as that again then he should go straight to A&E with having anaemia!!!

He now will just have to wait for the results of the blood test but my mind is a little at rest now as I was thinking the worst!!!

Thanks again Starlover and everyone else. Thats the lovely thing about Mumsnet, there is always someone to talk to when you need it most

Only just seen this crazydazy and am so glad it seems not to be cancer. That is the first thing I would have thought of too. Hope everything works out fine for you and dh. How scary your first post is!

crazydazy · 08/11/2005 11:58

I know I was beside myself with worry last night, DP was worried too I could tell and he normally doesn't worry about anything to do with health at all I usually have to beg him to go to the docs!!!!

Hopefully the blood test results will come back okay but I really was so scared it was cancer and just wanted to see if anyone else on Mumsnet had experienced a similar thing!!!!

OP posts:
crazydazy · 08/11/2005 12:01

Feistybird, it was right what you said about the dark blood being the worry, thats what the GP said too!! He said that because it was bright red it was likely to be a vein problem or piles not something from inside i.e liver, stomach, bowel etc!!! Thats a relief in itself!!!!

He has been told he may need surgery to correct it but just to keep an eye on it for the time being!!!

Feistybird · 08/11/2005 12:03

Hurray!

(not that piles is anything to cheer about obviously, it's all relative though!)
