Alternatives to drinking red wine?

freedomatacost · 05/05/2011 15:56

I have always enjoyed my red wine but for the past few years and dramas, I have been increasing using it as a way of relaxing and numbing myself. I am on anti-depressants so I know this is not a good mix.

It came to a head a few days ago when I felt very down and drank a whole bottle of wine. I still feel ill and have been off the booze since but know that the craving will return and especailly if I have a difficult situation to deal with.
I read that grapefruit juice was a good alternative and ofcourse non-alcohoic wine but to me it tastes aweful. Anyone got any sugesstions??

Sadly I haven't found a good alternative.

I have just been to Turkey where they don't drink much alcohol, as it is largely muslim, but they have loads of different juices, teas and coffees in the bars.
I had lots of: sour cherry juice, turkish tea, tukish cofee and iced coffee "frappe".
I quite like bitter lemon and orange personally, or make "gorwn up" lemonade with basil or lemon verbena.

Sometimes i'll have a small bit of redwine in a glass topped up with diet coke, say 1:3.

People always turn their noses up when i do it but then try it and go ooooooooh it's actually really nice, try it :)

It's really ensy to get in to the habit of drinking far too much red wine isnt it :(

I am probably the last person who can advise considering how much red wine I get through..Blush Aaanyway..when I want to cut back I drink Cobra Zero. I'm not a big lager drinker but it does taste nice, like a proper alcoholic drink rather than a soft drink. I cannot get on with alcohol free wines at all..urgh! Also tonic with elderflower codial, that's quite nice. If you put it in a wine glass it's nicer.

I should take my own advice really. I seem to get through far too much red wine also Blush

If I'm not on the wine I used to go for a diet coke, but that made me feel wierd so now I have sparkling water with some ice and lemon. People always think I'm being boring so I give them a taste and I have converted lots of people!

Ask on this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/relationships/1193358-The-Brave-Babes-Carry-On-Past-The-Easter-Booze-Offers - they'll have lots of suggestions .

I'm off red wine at the moment too- over indulged slightly (!!) last week. I went for a quick drink early and had ginger beer- might just be my new favourite drink! not sure how long that will last though...

Might have to change my MN name...Hmm

justhavintheone · 05/05/2011 22:42

rio, try crabbies alcoholic ginger beer! yum x

mylittlepeanut · 06/05/2011 00:30

Whilst pregnant I used to drink ginger beer mixed half and half with pineapple juice.

red wine with 5alive or coke or lemonade.

however Iam addicted to coke so that can be an issue in its self.

the only true alternative for me, is aldi fruit wine only 4% alchol and can last me 2 or 3 nights just like a bottle of wine or all week if with lemonade. its £1.99 a bottle and is ok tbh

Lima and soda or elderlower cordial and soda/sparkling water.
With regard to the grapefruit juice, find out if it will affect the medicine you take. I know that it increases the potency of some drugs.

Portofino · 06/05/2011 08:36

I like lime and soda too. It's quite a dry taste so seems a (nearly) suitable alternative to a vat glass of Chardonnay. I don't like sweet drinks.

freedomatacost · 06/05/2011 14:57

Thank you, I now have many things to try as alternatives. A freind has recently suggested pomegranate juice but so far I have not been able to find any here in WA.

I wish I could do what Dr Oz (Oprah) recommends and just have one lovely glass of Shiraz (which is good for u) and not want half a bottle which I know is not. R well least I get pleasure out of something!
