Many years ago, my mum went for a smear test, and the nurse asked if she would mind if a student watched. She said fine, thinking student nurses have to learn somehow. Turned out to be some pimply teenager on work experience!!! By then, she has "assumed the position" and wasn't really in a position to object. Probably wouldn't get away with it now...

I hate having smear tests, I had one couple of months after I had ds. Whenever I have one they can never seem to locate my cervix!

moondog · 07/11/2005 14:53

bbs...absolutely outrageous!!!!

felicity24 · 07/11/2005 14:53

I wimped out when preg to put it off as hadnt had one before, hiwever by the time my waters broke early and had prem baby i had had so many internals (could not beleive it when thay got torch out) I was so over it, only took a minute out of three years, will nenver worry again

hornbag · 07/11/2005 14:58

LTH at that expression ! ( only joking -got to admit it was the expression that sprung to my mind too!).
Rickman - I had a similar experience with the position of the cervix which meant practice nurse was taking ages and getting me to lie different ways etc. What made it worse though was she was the mum of a boy at DDs old nursery who I know on speaking terms . (hadn't known that she was the nurse doing the smears when I booked in though).

The torch Felicity??!!!

Que??????

felicity24 · 07/11/2005 15:02

yeah in hospital they literally shone a torch up there to see if my waters had broken, much more humiliating than smear

mumfor1sttime · 07/11/2005 15:14

Doctor shines a desk lamp in my direcion for my smears!

motherofboys · 07/11/2005 15:43

I have had a colposcopy today - don't think I will ever moan about a smear again. Just remember why you are going and that should put it all in perspective

When I went for a smear test last year the nurse was a very brisk, no-nonsense type but when she finally got in there she said "Well, you've got a splendid cervix there, pet!". What a compliment! Not quite what I'd put on my CV.

At her last smear, my sister, who never shuts up and doesn't like any time without chat, was rather unnerved at the silent way the nurse was going about it and tried to make some conversation. Unfortunately, what she came out with was "Do you enjoy this job?"

moondog · 09/11/2005 22:58

lol tobim!
Well done rickman!

I got a letter saying i needed a smear a few weeks ago but never got round to making the appointment.

I went to the doctors the other day and she mentioned it and said i didnt really have to bother having them until i was 25 - then i remembered twiglets (i think) thread about how important they anr and how they can save lives so i said i would have one anyway.

Its great that you raised awarness twiglet as they can save lives

bonchance · 09/11/2005 23:46

I had a rather strange experience. When the nurse had taken the smear and put it on the slide etc. she then proceeded to write out the label for it, rummage through files, lose her pen, in fact everything other than remove the speculum. It was very uncomfortable and I felt it was done 'on purpose.' Should I have complained?

JoolsToo · 09/11/2005 23:52

they don't bother me at all - I've had colposcopy too and can't say that it was any worse except that I could view my own cervix!

Twiglett · 10/11/2005 06:49

I was just checking up on you there Rickman .. good for you, glad its all over and done with.

Huggy .. that was a great comment and made me feel fab .. thank you
