One eye watering - anyone else had this?

My left eye has been watering for about 3 or 4 days now. It's not painful or red, but just keeps tearing up. It's getting really annoying now, as if I don't keep catching the tears they will eventually roll down my cheek. I do wear contact lenses but am not at the moment (the eye doesn't feel any different if I wear them or not - it still tears up, but isn't sore).

What could be causing this? I'm trying to decide whether to see my optician or try some eyedrops from the pharmacy first.

Why not go to your GP instead (if possible). He'd be able to make the optician decision for you.

An optician would be better than a G.P. I think.

Better knowledge base and better kit.
Might cost you something but maybe not depending on where you are.

As to what the cause is, the most likely (as you're not getting any other symptoms) is an issue with either the glands that produce the tears or the ducts that drain the away.

It needs looking at and other symptoms that you will be asked about will help decide.

Thanks both for replying. Luckily it stopped after 5 days. I did go to the GP and she thought it was probably an allergic thing and it just took a while for whatever it was to wash out of my eye. I live in London and I think it's the Plane trees - they're always making me cough and my eyes sting. I was just surprised that my eye didn't go red or swollen.
