Hello all.
dd2 has a stinking cold and her eyes are awful! all red and like lillte slits.
Went to GP and he prescribed Chloraphenicol eye drops.
I've just checked on the net and immediately found 2 articles saying that the over the counter one they are bringing out is not for the under 2's (dd is 8 months)
Am worried now as both articles mention 'grey babt syndrome'!!

Yes i worry alot and am paranoid about most drugs hence all the checking!

Any advice on these drops or alternative remedies??

the over the counter ones may have a completely different make-up to the ones you have... ie, larger amount of the active ingredient

i am sure your GP wouldn't have prescribed them if they weren't safe

but that says is has been reported in babies systemically treated with high doses of it

i am sure they're fine

as far as i can tell (just did a bit of research) the risk is only in very young babies (under 3 months) and occurs when they are given it orally or intravenously and in high doses.

it doesn't seem to be a problem given as eye drops... although obviously the drug manufacturers are being very careful with their guidelines!

Thanks starlover and Happymumof2.
The pharmacist also reassured dp though i will not start them till the morning anyway as she is eventually asleep on dp so am doing bottles while i have a sec.
She's been glued to me all day.
Happymumof2, was your dd o.k?

do you bf? Breast milk is supposed to work on conjunctivitis. You put the milk on the eye.

No daisy i don't, formula i'm afraid.
I do think half her eye problem is exhaustion as she can't sleep with al the snottiness!
