Anyone have weird periods?

pantaloons · 25/04/2011 19:34

Hope you don't mind me asking, but over the last 6 months or so my periods have gone a bit weird.

I go about 24 days in between and have always been fairly heavy, but now I bleed really heavilly (pad and superplus tampax every 2 hours). Then suddenly it stops totally for a day or two then starts all over again for another 4 days. It's a total pain in the arse, I can't use tampax in the middle as there's just no flow at all, then half an hour later I'm flooding faster than a pad can cope. Ick, sorry if TMI.

So I suppose I'm just wondering if this is normalish. I had an internal scan in Jan and when I told the doc he just said "oh right". So I assume it's not a massive problem. Come and tell me I'm not totally odd.....please.

I have noticed a change in flow too over the years (but medium to light in my case) and I have also noticed that I now get a day of it stopping completely for at least a day, and then coming back for a further day or two. I did some googling and reassured myself that this stop/start pattern is actually quite normal.

I wonder what causes it though?

pantaloons · 25/04/2011 19:57

Oh, goodness I'm dim, fancy not googling! Glad it's normal, even if it is a huge pain. blush

It happens to me too.

My flow changed over the last couple of years or so. It'll stop after three days, there'll be barely anything there for a day and then I'll get it back for another couple of days. It's weird.

Collegemum38 · 26/04/2011 23:09

I am 38 and my periods have changed alot a few times throughout my 30's. I currently seem to have 3 things going on. A slightly shorter cycle. I come on really slowly just aspotting day 1, day 2 horrendous (super plus tampns and huge night time pad), Day3 - no flow at all, Day 4 - same as day 2, then it just drags on getting less and less but still spotting unpto day 10 FFS!!!

Every now and again I get a "normal" period - like what mine used to be, 28 day cycle and lasting 5/6 days, not too heavy etc.

Dr says its my age and possibly perimenopause and not to worry.

Collegemum38 · 26/04/2011 23:11

The stopstart thing is so annoying - it just drags out the whole period IMO. Although the day off happens most months I cannot plan anything by it so it just a PITA really, making the whole period last longer!! Humph!

bosch · 26/04/2011 23:14

my periods became similar to how your describe, pantaloons, after I had ds1.

HV said that sometimes your hormones don't settle down well after pg and to give it time. No change after 9 years and another two ds.

I also had investigations between ds2 and 3 to find out if my odd periods were any reason for me being slow to get pg with no 3, but with no real result.

pantaloons · 27/04/2011 20:44

Sorry, you're all the same, but also glad it's not just me iykwim. Collegemum, they are exactly as you describe yours to be. Hopefully not on the change yet though as I'm only 29! It does make it a pain though as some months it's 27 days others as little as 20, then I can be on for 9 or 10 days. It gets quite draining really doesn't it?

I think we should have an off switch. I've had my 3 children now, Dh has had the snip and that's that! Switch my reproductive bits off now, thank you very much!

hi ladies, I've come here looking for advice too, i'm nearly 36, my periods have gone haywire over the last few months too, i'm usually heavy anyway, i have a 28 day cycle and they usually last 7 days. BUt they seem to have got worse! I'll come on and i'm ever so light for 2 days then i'm very heavy for 2 then it gets lighter and stops, but this month...i've been light for 4 days and today its the heaviest its ever been, i've got through 3 pairs of trousers and I've lost 6 very large blood clots (around the size of a 2 pound coin and sorry for the TMI) I'm very worried, is it worth going to the docs? thanks in advance

MissMarjoribanks · 28/04/2011 23:49

Yes, this is me. 1 day on. Stops for a day. Light for 3 days. Heavier for 4 days. Light for 3 days. Stops for a day. Another 2 days.

Adding up to 17 Shock days sometimes, in a 28 day cycle. It's a bloody nightmare.

foxinthewoods · 29/04/2011 00:39

Me too, 3 days of what you would expect, then hardly anything, so take out tampax (which is browny and not full) and just use a pad, then whoa - flood. Bloody annoying! sorry for TMI

nometime · 29/04/2011 00:50

Haywire here too, but I am 46, so may be more to do with my age. However, have been getting heavier and heavier (superplus EXTRA) lasts less than 1 hour!! and shorter time between them. Shortest time to date has been 16 days!!!

I get very little for first 24/36 hours then 24/48 hours of horribleness including huge great clots (sorry tmi) and then it goes back to virtually nothing but drags on.

My main problem is that it has made me very anaemic but also I get really tired because I have to get up 3 or 4 times every night.

easycomeeasygo · 29/04/2011 00:57

like me then foxinwoods?! sympathies to you all xx

foxinthewoods · 29/04/2011 01:38

Where do you get sp extra? I have the orange ones.

I think mine is getting worse and more erratic with age, easycome, no clots thank god and not loads of trousers as have had several procedures to rectify problems - endo etc

pantaloons · 29/04/2011 08:40

All I can say is I really hope I have an early menopause! It seems a long way away at the moment. Not that I'm wishing my life away!

TBH I'm thinking about having a coil fitted purely from a period control point of view. At the moment though i'm having tests and waitning for treatment for other things so I'll wait and see what happens there first.

Thanks you for taking the time to reply. You never feel as bad when you're in good company do you? Smile

nometime · 01/05/2011 20:22

Fox, the sp extra are Lils ones. But as you can imagine you only get 12/14 (can't remember) in a box!!

Foxinthewoods · 02/05/2011 23:20

Ahh, no good then, can't get on with non-applicators, get far too messy!

fridakahlo · 02/05/2011 23:31

Not exactly like you described op but since having my ds my periods are irreguler (currently on day 31 this cycle). They still last five days but seem to have adapted to only (tmi!) let the blood flow when I pee. I bleed a bit when I'm not on the loo but not in the way I did before. Anyone else had this?

Foxinthewoods · 02/05/2011 23:58

That's how I am now, after 5 days of full on, I have had 3 of the weeing thing...pain in the arse!

serendipity16 · 03/05/2011 10:48

Only just seen this thread..... but i have the same thing with my periods too.

I tend to have around a 10 day period, i am very very heavy for around 3-4 days (super plus extra + pad every hour), then heavy for a few more days, then a break of a day where i get no blood at all then back again with medium flow for the rest of the time until it stops completely.

pantaloons · 03/05/2011 12:38

Bloody things, you'd think after all this time us women would have evolved a better system!

Out of interest I don't suppose anyone has tred the coil as a way of stoppping periods? I'm seriously considering it, but am not 100% it would be worth it iykwim.
