well nearly...

I had severe tonsilitis and doc gave me huge load of antibiotics (2tabs x 4 per day for 10days!!)...am on day 6 now, feel loads better, tonsils fine etc but am sooo sick from the antibiotics and have also got terrible diorrhea!(sp?) I know this is the fault of the anti b's cos they are both stated as side effects and I always get these symptoms when i have antibiotics (hence, why i generally try to avoid them)

I am now utterly worn out from the nausea and diorrhea. Am seriously thinking of taking Day 7 of anti biotics and then stopping....what happens if you don't finish your course?

Which anti b's are they?

I just started a four month (at least) course on Saturday and am suffering already.
Yakult does help a bit.

It is very common to get nausea and diarrhoea from antibiotics, but please do not stop the course before it is completed. The bacteria that caused your tonsillitis may not fully be gone, and could come back, or worse the bacteria may evolve so that they become resistant to the antibiotics and you will end up with a worse infection.

Have you tried to eat yogurts? You need the ones with friendly bacteria in it...actimel is the best IMO, as it replaces the good bacteria back into your bowel that the antibiotic has killed. Try and eat small meals frequently so that you always have food innyour tummy as this can help with the nausea. You could try a dose of immodium to slow your bowel down a bit.

If you are really intent on stopping your antibiotics contact your gp first.

I really hope you feel better soon.

NO don't take immodium! Seriously you mustn't with antibiotic related diarrhoea. It's rare, but you could have an infection of your gut, caused by the antibiotics, and taking immodium can be dangerous if so.

I would call the doctor, and ask, because you should always let them know if the antibiotics cause bad side effects. Sometimes they go away by the third day or so, just your body adapting but to have these symptoms for 6 days os wrong.

My guess is they will tell you to stop them immediately, they could give you something different if the tonsilitis comes back but you shouldn't be feeling this bad.

IngridBergman · 19/04/2011 15:03

Btw if you stop them today or tomorrow, your symptoms ought to go away quite rapidly - within a day or two. If they don't or the diarrhoea gets worse or you have any bleeding with it, please go back to the GP immediately as these are possible signs of an infection.

which antibiotics are they btw?

agree with Ingrid, I'ld call up your GP about this, explain how bad the side effects are.
