Microgynon

I have just picked up my first script for the pill in almost 20 years ... showing my age here!! GP prescribed Microgynon - I don't want the Mirena Coil. Forgot to mention I'm still breastfeeding. Can I take it whilst feeding or is this the perfect opportunity to get my darling daughters weaned ....long overdue!!

Thanks

Bugger, I don't know but presumably you told the GP you were still feeding and he checked that it was ok?

Millie1 · 19/04/2011 11:29

SS ... no, forgot to mention it!

Hopefully someone sensible will come along soon! Or you could phone GP and ask?

I remember my doctor said I couldn't have Migrogynon while I was breastfeeding. He gave me the Mini-pill.

I think this kind of pill can reduce your milk suuply so its not a good one if you want to carry on bfing. I don't think its actually harmful, but if your supply stops then you'll have to give it up!

Seona1973 · 19/04/2011 13:13

it is a combined pill so not normally recommended while feeding as it can affect your supply. You would normally be prescribed a mini-pill as it is not supposed to affect feeding. I use cerazette (due to age/blood pressure issues, not bf!)

I took Microgynon, and it basically killed my supply dead in about 3 days. DS was 14 months, so looking to tail things off anyway, and he was only feeding at night by that time, but it really did kill things off. I had no engorgement with stopping feeding or anything, so worked very well for me in that way, but if you want to carry on, I think you need to look at a different pill.

shefliesthrutheair · 19/04/2011 13:49

I was told to stop feeding before going back to the pill. Don't know the medical reasons why, but I was told to take the mini-pill if I really wanted to use the pill at all.

Thanks everyone. The girls are well on the way to being 3 and on only a small night feed now anyway ... more comfort and ritual than anything else! I've been meaning to wean them properly for ages but never seemed to get round to it so now is the time! They've got less than a week, could be fun!! I am looking forward to light, short periods Grin!

Midwife told me that mini pill would have to be prescribed rather than microgynon. turns out it didn't matter as I'd stopped BF by the time I had pill prescribed but fairly sure you can't take it if you want to BF. It should say on the leaflet.

How old is your baby? I'm surprised the doctor didn't ask. they have a kind of tick list to ascertain risk in regard to age, medical history and length of time since birth of baby. (it's 21 days post-partum for microgynon)
