Can anyone help me diagnose this?

On Wednesday evening, I had a severe attack of what I would describe as indigestion. I'd had niggling upper abdominal pains all day and during the evening they escalated very quickly to the point of my being doubled up. Painkillers, Zantac, sitting upright, and a hot water bottle helped.

Following this I've had a couple of days of feeling massively constipated and gassy. This has now eased a bit but I'm left with a sort of dull ache in my upper abdomen which doesn't seem to be shifting. Painkillers work a little. I feel very tender around the bottom of my ribcage (centre and left occasionally - it moves!). There's also a lot of gurgling in that area! Basically I generally feel as if my digestive system is backed up in some way.

The inital severe attack has happened before and l ended up in A&E. They said it was indigestion/reflux and said to take Zantac and gaviscon. I've had the occasional ache in my upper abdomen since then and Zantac/painkillers have always worked.

Interestingly both severe attacks happened 3 or 4 months after childbirth and when breastfeeding. At the moment DD (who is EBF) also seems to have a really gassy tummy. Not colicy as such but some very explosive nappies!

Any ideas? Donjon think the left over dull ache is just a hangover from the attack last week?

I meant the pain is central and to the right. Sorry!

I get this sometimes, the pain is intense and i,m really sore and delicate for a few days afterwards I found out through doing an exclusion diet that i,m allergic to milk fat and lo and behold since switching to skimmed milk products no more pain! maybe you are sensitive to something the most common being dairy and wheat. When i,m having an attack i find pepto bismol works as it coats the stomach and i also drink gallons of peppermint tea. Hope your feeling better soon, also get checked out by your doc for ulcers and gallstones just incase.

Pain to the right could be gall bladder related. Or it could be that you have gastritis or the start of an ulcer. Take the Zantac regularly not just when you have the pain at the moment according to the recommended dosage on the box, and see if that over the next while settles the pain.

I would get an app with dr as you may need to have further investigations to see what exactly you have, especially as you have had this pain before.

Have you tried gaviscon advance as I find it better than ordinary gaviscon...I have a bottle beside my bed for night time pain!

Hope you feeling better soon.

Sounds like it could be gallbladder related, ask your GP for a scan- simple and painless.

Hi everyone and thank you. I've got a doctors appointment this afternoon to start investigating.

I've been feeling better to the extent that I thought I was probably ok and the have had another 'attack' this morning with fairly 'intense' pain in exactly the same place. Weirdly enough it kicked in immediately after a trip to the loo (sorry if TMI).

Hopefully the doctor can help.

Doctor thinks it's gallbladder related too and he's referred me for a scan.
