Iron Levels

Went to the docs yesterday as was feeling pretty rough. She decided I looked anaemic and did a blood test.
Anyway, they rang me this morning to say my level was 5.8 - should be over 12 apparently - and I needed to go to hospital for a blood transfusion.
Saw two docs at hospital who asked lots of questions, took lots of blood etc etc and they said it was very low and needed a few pints tomorrow.
Got to the stage of being transferred to a bed when a consultant came, saw me for 2 minutes and then declared that I could go home! Said that as I was young (34) and had obviuosly had it for a long time , then I should just take iron tablets and get on with it!
Now I am confused, fed up with being in hospital all day and it leading nowhere. Nobody wants to stay in hospital, but at least then the cause could have been found out. Heavy periods have been ruled out.
Anyway, thanks for reading this ramble and just wondered if anyone had any advice.

I'm suprised they didn't insist on doing the transfusion. After having a c-scetion, my bloodtest results were 8.5 which I was told was border line for needing a transfusion.

I would go back to the Drs and ask for another blood test in a few weeks to see if it has increased.
