Lump in breast GP in an hour, what to expect?

piffle · 02/11/2005 10:36

have read the other thread but did not want to hijack due to sensitive nature of that thread (hugs lalaa)
I foudn a lump, hard marble in left lower breast.
DP has gone to motorycle show in Birmingham proclaiming, don't worry it will be fine" I'm sure statistics say that but I'm terrified.
What will the GP do/refer fob me off, what do I ask for?

Thanks Amanda
I've asked to see a female doctor will come back and say what she says later...
I know they cannot tell much from palpation...

dp says if they fanny about he'll ring up his bupa and get me a private appt damn the expense. I kinda would like to think that the NHS is shit hot about these things though....

they usually are pretty hot piff. let them know that you can get there quickly if there's a cancellation at the breast clinic (if you get referred there, which I'm sure you will)

piffle · 02/11/2005 11:05

Thaks ok will know to push for referral then and not be fobbed off etc
Thanks so much - is it normal to feel all weepy and worry about leaving your kids without a mother, do thinks I'm morbid and loopy, I said not to consider it would be naive although I do feel I have perspective....

If GP thinks lump needs checking she should refer you under the two-week wait rule -i.e. appt within 2 weeks. NB if you get one of these, pls pls don't turn it down or you may have to wait ages, i'm sure that's obvious, sorry.

piffle · 02/11/2005 13:25

Right
Gp is also part of the specialist local breast health clinic, so she said
you are on day 16 which is leading up to the lumpiest part of your cycle, but your left breast is markedly lumpier than the right but the largets lump is fluid and small and cannot be felt with the flat of your hand, she says her instinct is to wait until period appears then check again BUT she says she never leaves a lump unchecked and has referred me on an under 4 week request, she asked me if I was happy and I said yes as I was. period is due in 2 weeks.
She said to check the lump once a week and if it changed at all to ring back for urgent referral.
She said if I wanted more urent referral she would action it as so, but I felt ok about things.
Felt reassured and ok about things and still do so.

pifle I too have a lump in my left breast and am awaiting my appt from breat clinic.

I understand your worry as I too am in the same boat.

Good luck and all the best- maybe we can be each others support?

motherpeculiar · 02/11/2005 14:25

good luck Piffle, and you too Jambuttie

I had this about 18 months ago and had to wait a couple of months to be seen at the breast clininc at hospital, but when I was seen they were very thorough and luckily nothing odd was found.

Piffle, 4 weeks sounds ok with the proviso you can get in quicker if it mutates at all

jambuttie, try to get fast referral, I didn't enjoy waiting those couple of months

ladies - keep checking and NEVER ignore a lump
(public service broadcast complete for today)

bundle · 02/11/2005 14:30

piff sounds like she knows what she's doing

piffle · 02/11/2005 14:39

jam buttie sounds like a plan, would be a great help to be able to share with someone in the same boat....
CAT me anytime

Thanks will do.

Docs say I will have referral in weeks rather than months whatever that means.

I was back at gp 21/10/05 and that is when she said weeks not months still nothing yet thoiugh

well went to hospital today fr the appt, it was very nice.

After an examination on both breasts doctor said I think it's benign but I do need to take some fluid from it using a needle- I nearly hit the roof. I so did not expect it to happen today and was expecting a lot of pain which I was pleasantly surprise was none ( do feel very tender now though 4 hours on)

Doc has arranged a scan for 2 weeks today said if he done it today thye would just see the bruising from needle bit

madmarchhare · 10/11/2005 16:06

I was going to start a separate thread to ask athe same thing as I am also waiting to go to see GP with something that Im not quite happy about.

One breast feels odd, I cant quite explain but there is some 'bumpiness' at the very back. Having not been blessed with an ample bossom Im wondering if I can just feel things more IYSWIM.

Anyway, Im going away (to Prague, yey) for a couple of days with DH (all alone, yey) and dont want to see doctor before then.

I hope everything turns out well for you both, its very worrying isnt it? Im doing the 'what ifs' too, I cant stop myself.
