Lump in breast GP in an hour, what to expect?

have read the other thread but did not want to hijack due to sensitive nature of that thread (hugs lalaa)
I foudn a lump, hard marble in left lower breast.
DP has gone to motorycle show in Birmingham proclaiming, don't worry it will be fine" I'm sure statistics say that but I'm terrified.
What will the GP do/refer fob me off, what do I ask for?

Nope, nothing. Its really starting to get to me now.

jane313 · 15/12/2005 17:58

yes I think waiting is what hell must be like. And it really hit home today that it can be all about money too. Am also waiting for a referal to hospital as am having problems trying to conceive. I rang them up as I'd heard nothing and found out I would have to wait 4 months to see someone. Its costs £155 to go private and I have an appointment next week. Luckily I can afford this but feel so awful for people who can't.

It might be worth chasing up your hospital had not even got my GPs letter. I may do that with my ultrasound but as I handed the request to a woman in the department it really shouldn't have got lost.

merrymarchhare · 15/12/2005 21:00

Its only been two weeks so I suppose I'll give it three like she said, maybe until after Christmas. I dont really want it to spoil things if they say something I dont want to hear.

I did think about going private, but when GP said she wasnt too concerned I calmed down a bit, but still keep having these panics and wondering whether I still should.

madmarchhare · 10/01/2006 09:46

According to 'appointments' at the hospital a non-urgent referal is 13 weeks.

I now have to wait until March.

I suppose I should maintain my belief that if it was suspicious I would have had an urgent referal but I only feel sick right now. DH has gone to work without so much as a 'Dont worry blah blah...'.

jane313 · 12/01/2006 18:14

oh go how annoying. waiting is the worst part.

I still have no date for my ultrasound. I chased up mine and they just said I was on the waiting list. I left a message when I found out I was pregnant to see if that would push me up the list. I heard nothing then I miscarried anyway.

lalaa · 12/01/2006 18:29

without wishing to panic anyone, I just wanted to say that if you have a discrete lump and you are over 30 you should be seen within two weeks - government guidelines. I fell into the gap, had an 11 week wait, took on board all the GPs' reassurances, and I still ended up with a breast cancer diagnosis. I do hope that isn't the case for you, but if you do fall into the above category, make an absolute nuisance of yourself and get seen. If it is cancer it is much better if you are diagnosed earlier rather than later.

jane313 · 12/01/2006 18:32

do you mean been seen by a dr? I got seen very fast at the breast clinic but its taking ages to arrange an ultra sound. Last time I had a lump it was all done on the same day.

How are you doing with it?

lalaa · 12/01/2006 20:32

yeah i mean seen by a consultant - the referral time. you sound as though you've already done that, so if the consultant thinks a wait is acceptable having examined you, then I guess you do just have to wait. my experience was that once I actually got up to the hospital, i had examination, ultrasound, mammogram and core biopsy and likely diagnosis (couldn't confirm until result of biopsy, which took a week) all within a couple of hours. it was a huge shock after all the platitudes of the GPs I saw.

Anyway, that was all back in September and here we are in January. I'm doing OK with the chemo but feeling very weary with it all. Am between cycles 3 and 4, with 8 cycles needed altogether, and in the middle of waiting for the bloody PCT to tell me whether they are going to fund herceptin. b*stards are keeping me hanging around to find out, which is really the last thing I need on top of fighting the disease and keeping some semblence of a normal life going, particularly for dd. i really hope we hear soon, and have pushed my oncologist to do something. feel like I'm the only one doing anything pro-active.

am hugely looking forward to the summer and having a party at the end of feb to raise some money either for my herceptin (if I need it) or we'll give it to a cancer charity. another party planned for late summer to celebrate end of treatment, dh's 40th and our 10th wedding anniversary. and of course, there's robbie to look forward to in september.

sorry, rambling on and on.......

jane313 · 12/01/2006 22:08

god you don't need battles for treatment with all this. I can imagine the waiting is hardest of all. I too hate not being proactive. My sil was diagnosed last jan. She had a lumpectomy chemo and radiotherapy and is doing really well now. Her hair has grown back. I'm sure I would not have coped with it all so well. Good luck with it all.

I had my clinic a few weeks ago, here in Lincs it is super quick, think they're hot on it for some reason...
I had an all in one appt
Nurse appt
mammogram
all clear on mammogram

was told in dr speak that I have large lumpt tits which dp found very amusing
I am to be checked every year though to measure the fybrocystic changes as he said a very large portion of my left breast has this fyborcystic change though.
Relief though
Hopw all of you get the same answer xxxxxxx

Thanks for your posts lalaa, I really do hope you get the funding you need.

I did discuss the two week wait with my GP, as I was aware of that (my BF has recently been through all this), but I dont have a 'lump' as such, more of a fybrocystic type thing, so have been deemed 'routine'.

Good news piffle.

I had my appointment yesterday and was discharged. The consultant was happy that any irregularities were hormonal and nothing to be concerned about.

Piffle · 22/02/2006 10:24

relieved for you mmh

hi , hope you don't mind me joining in. went to GP two weeks ago with a lump. appointment at breast clinic 5 days later, mammogram and scan clear, thought i was going home. Doc says, "you know there's a lump, I know there's a lump - biopsy please. He did it there and then with (negative) results an hour later. Nerve-wracking day, but all done and dusted in 6 hours.

Why isn't it like this for everybody? I'm appalled at the wait some of you are having to endure. The 'what-ifs' go through everybody's mind. It's downright cruel to keep you hanging on for weeks over such a potentially serious health issue. NHS should have standard practice.

I would agree with the lady, (sorry can't remember your name hun) - who said go for it....make a nuisance of yourself. don't give in til you get that appointment.

good luck lalaa
