Gynae exam

So, tomorrow I have a gynae exam. I've never had one, apart from smears. I have bowel/bladder discomfort and mid cycle ovary pain. I'm a bit nervous. So, what is likely to happen exactly?

Gynae should take down both your general and menstrual histories and will ask if you've had any previous abdominal surgery like appendix removal etc.
If you have kept a pain/symptom diary bring that along with you as well.

You will likely have an internal ultrasound scan done. This will give the gynae a clear picture of your ovaries and uterine cavity. For this a phallic shaped wand is used: it is covered with a sheath and KY jelly type stuff. It sounds horrid but the fear of internals is worse than the reality in my experience. I have had more such exams than I care to mention and I'm still here.

Good luck tomorrow, let us know how you get on.

My GP is doing the exam, so he already has the history thank God. I am crap at keeping a diary, although I know I should Blush. Erm, because of the bowel issue, is he likely to, er, rummage in that region? I just don't want to be surprised, as it were.

take a good book...sat in the waiting room for over an hour, but mine didnt rush you when you got in there

it was just like a smear only a bit more rummaging, tried to get a biopsy but i had an unco-operative cervix Blush

i had to go and have a general in the end, i had photos of my bits and a cheese sandwich...grand day out !

i also had the camera wand experience...no sandwich but a nice chat about labradors!

no one stuck anything up my bum hole at any of these appointments....tho i was worried about farting as im of an age where loud farting seems to have become a hobby Hmm

very unlikely you will have a TVS- transvaginal ultrasound in a GP surgery. Most likely a bilateral exam- one hand inside and another on your tummy feeling for lumps and bumps.
Possible a finger up bum too ( though not all at same time=Smile

Oh bloody hell. I will not make eye contact while we are...attached. This time tomorrow, it will all be over

So, it wasn't so bad. Nothing to feel, and I have to go next week for swab results and to decide what to do next. Thanks ladies :)
