Mastitis - what course does it follow usually?

Hello, I have had mastitis and was in bed yesterday evening with chills and fever. Having followed the usual steps (feed as much as possible, drain the breast, lots of fluids) I feel slightly better today, and have no chills or fever. However, my breast is still tender and feels bruised. I did massage yesterday and through the night when the baby fed, but am not sure whether to continue, and whether this tenderness is normal?

Any home remedies appreciated too.

Thanks!

I had mastitis, I used cold cabbage leaves inserted in my bra to help...they did help too.

On my third DC though the cabbage leaves didn't work, by the time I got to the chills and fever stage my only option was a course of anti-biotics...the bed was soaked with me sweating...but I was soooo cold and had 3 duvets on.

I'd say if it gets any worse a trip to the GP is probably your best bet.

Thank you, I'll see how I am in the morning and go to the doctor if necessary, though I'd prefer not to use antibiotics.

I didn't want the antibiotics either...but I really did end up quite poorly with the mastitis...huge red, swollen bunged up spot on boob...it had been like that on and off for about 4 weeks before I gave up and called the doc'.

I hope you feel better soon...I remember crying with the pain so you have my utmost sympathy.

There's definately a time for them, and that sounds like it! And the cold thing is really wierd - I kept putting more clothes and blankets on and had a hot water bottle and everything and was still freezing. Thanks for your sympathy! (Pretty hardcore to go 4 weeks, I was thinking a day.)
