HELP! 14 month old dd just possibly eaten some dishwasher tablet... how worried do i need to be?

she got into a child locked cupboard, got out the dishwasher tablet (those pouchy type ones) managed to get it open and has got some of the powder smeared around her mouth... so possibly some of it has actually been swallowed... have given her a big drink of water and she doesn't seem remotely bothered, but do i need to be taking her to hospital or just keep getting her to drink water?

they are toxic/very irritating so i would take her

Well... both my sons have done this. DS1 with a lemon fresh pouchy one. DS2 with a finish quantum thingy.

In each case I just got a squeezy bottle of water and rinsed their mouths out. And kept making them sip water.

Neither of them suffered any ill effects. But someone else may be on to say that this was the worst possible thing to and that medical attention required. Mine just seemed so completely fine and well that I didn't get health advice.

Really - it didn't occur to me to take to hospital. Certainly not A&E - wasn't an emergency.

I may have rung NHS direct re ds1. Cannot remember, but memory being jogged.

I would take her to A&E they are v toxic

another one for a&e here, they can burn the esophagus (sp?) quite badly.

I'm sure it will give instructions on the packet about what to do.

Sometimes you shouldn't give water.

I would get in touch with NHS Direct.

thanks all, just spoke to NHS direct who looked it up on their toxins info and they are not unduly worried as apparently it would cause major burning/frothing/coughing/vomiting virtually immediately if enough of it had been eaten... so another one to chalk up to experience, and another cupboard to be relocated out of her reach...

It is very dependent on the brand of tablet you are using. This happened to me this morning and I googled and found this thread. Followed the advise to call NHS direct. They checked the toxins in the tablet my LO had eaten and advised me based on that; we have to be under observation for 6 hours at the hospital because of one of the chemicals in the tablets I use. Thanks for the advise! It's always best to check with NHS direct! X
