How long do bruises last?

Ok so it's not really a health problem so it's not worth a doctor's appointment and googling looks like a bad idea so I thought I'd ask you lovely people if you have experienced the same.

I fell down some stairs in January 2009, fell forward and ended up sliding down on my shins and the steps had those metal edges on them - ouch. No majors injuries but bruised my legs pretty badly. I STILL have brown marks on my shins where the bruises were - is this normal? They don't really hurt anymore but they are sore to shave over as the hair on these patches grows faster than the rest of my legs and is really coarse in comparison, it's weird. And now my legs look like crap because I'm really pale anyway and now they're all patchy.

I am thinking it's maybe just because the bruises were on the bone and they take longer to fade? Also I bruise like a peach anyway and if I have spots then they take ages to fade and I have a red mark for a few months. Is there anything that would help them fade? Thank you.

Massaging the skin with oil is supposed to help for scars and stretch marks, can't remember which oil though, I think it was something like bio-oil, but I reckon any veg oil would be OK too (eg olive); for recent bruises I swear by homeopatic arnica, not sure if it would make much difference now, but it wouldn't hurt trying.
