Overactive Thyroid - feeling shitty - help please!

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with an overactive thryroid 3 weeks ago after being diagnosed to hospital with a very fast heart beat. I was prescribed beta blockers to control my heartbeat and carbimazole for my thyroid.

In the last 3 weeks I have had tonsilitis and a nasty tummy bug, and this week my skin is itchy and covered in lumps and the joints in my hands and swollen and painful. My GP has told me that my immune system is compromised by the carbimazole and that the skin and joint problems are an allergic reaction to it. However, they have prescribed me anti-histamines and told me to continue with the carbimazole until I see the Endocrinologist at the end of the month.

I feel exhausted, look awful and havent got the energy to do basic things for my DC. I'm a lone parent and my family and friends are helping out at the moment but the level of help they're giving at the moment cant be continued indefinitely.

How long is it likely to be until I feel any better? The stuff I've read suggests that the consultant is likely to suggest continuing with the carbimazole in the hope that my thyroid will return to normal. But I'm not convinced I can continue feeling this awful for the next year waiting for that to happen. I hope that they decide to remove my thyroid completely and prescribe thyroxine.

Any thoughts...

You will beinging to feel better, it takes a little time for the carb to work around 4-6 weeks from starting carb you should be feeling better.

you are having some really nasty side effects as well from the carb.

Your body has been working overtime and you can't do basic things at the moment as your body needs to rest more -take it slowly and think that you are nearly half way there.

There is a thread on thyroid problems with several others with all thyroid problems www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/1137357-Can-we-have-a-roll-call-thyroid-problems-sign-in-here/AllOnOnePage#24381295

Have just been reading that thread. Are the side effects of the carbimazole likely to last as long as I'm taking it? Is what my doctor said about the weakened immune system accurate? I've got 3 DC under 5 so lots of germs in our house!
