Can only echo what blu and easy said, this is just giving it a name. Strokes do not always show up on a scan although a bleed/haemorrhage usually would. The brain has an amazing capacity to recover especially when age is on your side. The first 3 months is usually considered a good indicator of how much recovery someone will get. Fingers crossed for you misdee xx

MeerkatsUnite · 24/10/2005 20:04

Am very sorry to hear this Misdee.

Would echo the suggestion made earlier to look at the Stroke Association's website www.stroke.org.uk.
The more info you have the better.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hulababy · 24/10/2005 20:08

Oh misdee. I really don't know what to say.

My heart goes out to you

Zephyrrywitchescat · 24/10/2005 21:02

Misdee I've always assumed that a stroke is a blood clot of sorts on the brain as that is why you have to be careful with migraines. In a migrain the blood vessels in a certain part of the brain constrict and stop the blood getting to other parts. In my case, my migraines affect the sight in generally one of my eyes and I lose the feeling in one of my arms - which is similar to what a stroke does. Obviously a stroke is much more severe than a migraine and I'm not saying it's the same - just the same idea - might make it sound a bit more understandable. xx

puff · 24/10/2005 21:03

Misdee, I'm sorry to read this .

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 24/10/2005 21:06

Oh Misdee. I don't know what to say. So very sorry and .

bubble99 · 24/10/2005 21:55

misdee. Is it a stroke or a TIA? (transient ischaemic attack) The former will result in permanent (although may well respond to physio and OT, as other areas of the brain can compensate for the loss of function) damage and the latter (TIA) is when the blood flow is occluded but returns IYSWIM. Rather like angina meaning temporary restriction of blood flow (and pain) to the heart muscle and an MI (myocardial infarction) being permanent damage.
If it was a TIA then this would mean that there was no permanent damage, and his sight may be restored.

Keep us posted.

misdee · 24/10/2005 21:57

today they are saying stroke. no mention of TIA.

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 24/10/2005 22:30

Bubble, I was thinking that as they were actually reffering to the ?clot, it would sound more like a stroke than just a TIA.

Oh misdee. You're having a tough tough time, aren't you? So sorry to hear this. Hope Peter comes through this asap.

northender · 24/10/2005 22:56

I think the TIA/stroke query isn't relevant now. TIAs are also known as mini strokes and part of their definition is that the effects last less than 24 hrs which is obviously not the case with Peter unfortunately. However everyone recovers differently from a stroke and noone will be able to say definitively how he will recover. He sounds like such a fighter I think that makes such a difference- the power of the mind. Let's hope so.

misdee · 24/10/2005 23:03
