Sorry to hear more bad news Misdee - here's hoping things really turnaround for you all soon.

deegward · 24/10/2005 16:46

sending you love and best wishes

Easy · 24/10/2005 16:47

I'm not a medic Misdee, but I understand that 'a stroke' is the phrase they use when a blood clot forms in the brain and affects the blood supply to one part of the brain. So the fact that they're using the phrase now doesn't change the original diagnosis.

What is affected by the stroke just depends on where the clot occurs.

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this.

Praying for you all.

Blu · 24/10/2005 16:51

Misdee, I THINK (no medical expert here) that a stroke IS a blood clot in the brain.
Not surprised you are alarmed - it must be impossible trying to take in all the complicated info you have to keep up with. And totally exhausting.

Could you ask to have 10 mmins with the consultant to clar up all your questions?

Blu · 24/10/2005 16:52

sorry - x posred with easy - slow typing!

misdee · 24/10/2005 17:18

thinking of you

nailpolish · 24/10/2005 17:21

misdee, if the stroke is afftecting his sight he must have had a stroke (clot that damages the vessel its in and the part of the brain its in) in the sight part of his brain which i THINK is at the back of your head, just above the neck

misdee · 24/10/2005 17:21

they said it was in thew area of the brain that affects sight.

OP posts:
nailpolish · 24/10/2005 17:21

or maybe a stroke at the optic nerve?

nailpolish · 24/10/2005 17:22

forget last post then

tamum · 24/10/2005 17:22

A stroke can be either a clot or a haemorrhage, basically, a bleed in the brain. It sounds far more likely to be a clot in this case, doesn't it? Poor you and poor Peter. Stroke damage can often be repaired pretty well by the body, you know. As Easy wisely says, it doesn't change what's happened, just giving it a name, but I can understand how worried you are

nailpolish · 24/10/2005 17:23

im pretty sure the sight part of the brain is at the back of the head

a stroke can be caused by a clot or high bp

is peter on warfarin or herparin? this is supposed to prevent clots

he is on antihypertensives i presume as well?

misdee · 24/10/2005 18:09

he is on warfarin and aspirin. usually just on warfarin. heperin is sometimes used.

Misdee, so sorry to hear this

HRHWickedwaterwitch · 24/10/2005 18:27

sorry to hear this misdee

Wallace · 24/10/2005 18:28

My friend's brother has a condition which makes his blood clot too much, and has had several strokes. He recovers so quickly, and has no lasting effects. He is 27 BTW. Hope this helps to reassure you that the word stroke isn't always as scary as it sounds

misdee · 24/10/2005 18:31

thanks goodness. i still connect strokes with older people, you think by now i wouldnt.

Yes, the visual cortex is in the back part. That's why a fall, for instance, when you hit the back of your head can potentially damage sight. It's really so difficult to say how things will go visually. We used to think that any damage in that area could be permanent, but I believe research is causing many doctors to rethink that. I'm so, so sorry Misdee, that you and Peter are going through all of this. I think there is certainly a chance that he can recover vision but this is not an area that I am totally up to speed on, unfortunately. Chipmonkey is also an optometrist and may be able to give you some more information.

MassacreOHara · 24/10/2005 19:00

Misdee, I often think about you and I always follow your threads but I rarely post as whatever I write just seems so inadequite. I just want to say how sorry I am to hear this news.

You are amazingly brave, I find it hard to imagine what you are all going through.

Thinking of you and your family x

freakyzebra · 24/10/2005 19:43

HI Misdee, am so sorry to hear of this. All I know about strokes is that the younger the sufferer the more likely that they will make a complete recovery.

Frizbe · 24/10/2005 19:47

Oh {{{Hugs}}} Honey, lots of good advice below, thinking of you all.
