I had the marina coil, I had it taken out today as my skin has got worse and worse over the last 2 years since i got it in.

I was given cilest combinde pill and told it could help with my skin, and will regulate periods.

Ive just been online to look it up and seen lots of horrible sories about it Sad.

So i'm hoping some of you can tell me something positive about this pill.

I previously had cerazette pill years ago which had a very very bad affect on me, terrible mood swings and constant bleeding. But I was fine with micrgynon for years....

Also wondering if anyone else has pcos if they can give me any tips about managing it.

Ive looked online and it seems being over weight is an issue. I am at the top weight for my weight but I am not overweight, but now im worrying about it all really....

Hi there,

I have pcos and was on dianette for years (which you're not really meant to) and it was the only thing that helped me to manage symptoms mainly my bad skin.

I haven't been on any form of hormonal contraception for years now as I decided I was better off without it, skin is still awful but just something I have to put up with.

I don't think you'll know until you give the cileste a good go- maybe 6 months or so, keep a log of any changes in moods, skin, weight, periods etc in a diary so you have stuff to show doc if you need to.

Hope you get on with it

Thank you for your reply.

Do you think there is anything i need to start doing to prevent any future problems?

From looking online I have seen that alot of women with PCOS develop dibeates later in life and become overweight, so i'm thinking there might be a certain diet that will help prevent these problems.

Also I know alot of women with this have fertility problems, but my doctor said they will not check to see if i have fertility untill i am trying to have more children.

A low gi diet is recommended (though I am rubbish at sticking to it!). I find that keeping down the amount of rubbish carbs helps - though again - all the things I crave!

There is a charity called Verity here that have lots of information.

IShallWearMidnight · 16/03/2011 19:16

low GI is the best diet for the majority of women with PCOS (we don't tend to deal with carbs very well). Being overweight can trigger symptoms or make them worse, losing weight with sensible diet and moderate exercise (I know I know, sounds so easy doesn't it Wink) can help minimise symptoms. Acne and excess hair generally need something else (Dianette, Vaniqua, laser).

But everyone with PCOS has a different combination/severity of symptoms and what works for one won't always work for another. One woman I know lost weight on Slimming World green days (unlimited pasta, rice etc) whereas I need something more like Atkins to shift even a pound.

I have PCOS - didn't realise till I came off microgynon to TTC.

After I'd had DD (subfertile, but Clomid worked for me), I was on Dianette for a while - it controlled the symptoms but was starting to make me depressed. So I've been on Marvelon ever since, which suits me fine.

My understanding is that combined pills aren't always the best idea with PCOS - is there any reason why you haven't gone back to microgynon if that was OK before?

In terms of management - if you can stay not overweight that's great. There seems to be something of a vicious cycle where gaining weight makes the PCOS worse which makes you more likely to gain weight (due to glucose intolerance, leading ultimately to diabetes).

Low GI or higher protein, lower carb type of food may be helpful.

thank you all for the tips, i love carbs so will not like doing low carbs, im not really over weight, but i'm thinking prevention is better then cure also i'm sure things get worse with age.

About 1 month ago i was about 9.7 stone and i'm 5.2 feet. not sure if i have put on a few pounds recently but not too much more.

I will look into low GI.

So when you say low carbs would you just eat less carbs in the evening?

As I really really love carbs and if i stop eating them would loose weight very quickly but put it back on quickly as soon as i start eating them again...

Have a look at this book. It's full of useful and there's also a PCOS diet book by the same author.

I have PCOS too and my symptoms have definitely worsened as I've gained weight. I'm trying to motivate myself to do something about it at the moment!

Dianette was by far the best pill for my acne. I took it for about 5 years but then moved area and my new GP was horrified that I'd been prescribed it for so long (it's only supposed to be a short term thing). I found microgynon and yasmin both helped too, but haven't been able to go back on a combined pill post-DD2 due to high BMI Sad

I'm currently taking antibiotics and using Zineryt for my spots. panoxyl worked well for me for a while but my skin started reacting badly to it after a few months.

Feel free to PM me if you want any further info Smile

control - thank you for your message. I will get a copy of that book. i dont actually feel that i need to loose weight, but im thinking i should try to prevent putting on anymore.

grimma - i forgot to say, the reason i am now using cilest is because that is what the doctor recommended, im not sure why she didnt recommend microgynon, I think she said cilest is likely to help my skin problems.

Can i ask you all how you were diganosied?

I had an ultra scan which showed i have more then 12 cycsts on each ovary. but nothing showed up in my blood results. so the doctor I saw at the time said i do not have PCOS. but a doctor i saw recently said i have and the reason it did not show up in my blood was because of the marina coil.

so im not even 100percent that I have it.

Gosh, its so long ago I can't remember in detail - but the diagnosis wasn't till after I'd been off the pill trying TTC for quite a while - no periods, spotty, then I had blood tests which I think indicated PCOS (can't remember what they test - seems likely that something like mirena could bugger results) and then a scan.

I'd have thought that if you've got acne, irregular periods and a bunch of ovarian cysts, you've got enough to be considered to have the syndrome.

Anyway, you're absolutely right that prevention is better than cure!
'low carb' means different things to different people - for me its things like having greek yog and nuts for breakfast instead of something like cereal or toast ; if we're having pasta it'll be a small portion of wholewheat with lots of veg. The sort of thing thats sustainable eating rather than a temporary 'diet'.

happenedagain · 17/03/2011 18:40

is there somewhere that gives you more information about fertility with pcos? I do not even know if i will have problems TTC do you know if there is anyway to find out? I am not planning on having more dc's in the near future but will defintly want some more later on as im only 25.

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 17/03/2011 18:51

AFAIK if you have irregular periods (when you're not on some form of hormone contraceptive, obv) then chances are you're not ovulating often/predictably, which obviously makes conception harder. I'm not sure there's any way to tell what's happening if you are on a pill/implant.

But treatments such as clomid can be effective ... there are a lot of mums on MN who have PCOS.
