Why can I smell keytones?

My ds ( 8 months) has woken in the night the last couple of days and seems a little under the weather but nothing serious, but when I have picked him up in the night I thought he smelt of keytones, my father is diabetic so I recognised the smell. Any idea why?

dehydrated? not eating enough?

littlesteppers · 22/10/2005 23:24

sometimes it just means they havent had enough fluid in them, which dilutes everything.

if you are worried talk to your healthvisitor/doctor especially if you have diabetes int the family. it will put your mind at rest

ds's breath always smells like this in the morning. But with a family history I would be more likely to get it checked out.

DD smells ketone-y when she is round the edges of an illness.

Ds smells of ketones when he has a sore throat/cold.

what do they smell like?

flamebat · 23/10/2005 09:46

Errr... not really sure how to describe, for DD it is sort of sweet and bitter at the same time (if that makes sense) - its only recently someone told me that it was a ketone type smell, for me, she just smells odd.

Ketones usually smell a bit like pear drops.
