Recurrent thrush ... but NOT while pregnant / breastfeeding

I suffer from recurrent thrush (confirmed originally by gyne), generally it flares up every other month and I treat it with fluconazole. During both my pregnancies and while breastfeeding I have been completely clear, much to the amazement of my midwives (they had expected it to get worse). I had 2 months between stopping breasfeeding DC1 and falling pregnant with DC2, and again it flared up, but while pregnant and breastfeeding (about 4 years in total across both children) I had no trouble at all (bliss!!). Now I've stopped breastfeeding DC2 it has all started up again. So my question is not really how to deal with this as I've read past threads, but does anyone have any knowledge on how this may be linked to pregnancy/breastfeeing? As my diet hasn't changed, neither has form of contraception,I imagine it may be hormonal related? Any thoughts gratefully received!!

Hi there, this is a bit of a random answer and is dredged from memory, but I seem to remember an episode of 'embarrassing bodies' where a woman went in with what she had thought (and had previously had diagnosed as) recurrent thrush, and it turned out to be a mild thyroid problem. Since your (hormone laden) pregnancies are affecting the condition, it might be worth a quick google search?

Sorry - don't mean to alarm! May be a case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. It could be anything - a friend of mine had to give up eating all white flour products because they gave her repeated thrush. Maybe dietary changes are also worth looking at.

Whatever it is, if it's bothering you, don't be shy about asking for a second opinion. It must be driving you nuts, so don't let bureaucracy stand in the way of you getting a proper diagnosis.

Hi I had recurrent thrush diagnosed by dr...who in the end sent me to std clinic as it was so severe and frequent.
It turned out to be an allergy to a vaginal lubricant called replens. This was very unusual apparently, but the allergy took on the same symptoms of severe thrush.

Is there anyting you could be allergic too?

Thanks for the ideas. Will certainly google thyroid problems. I think latex allergy was ruled out at GUM clinic, but making allergy connections is often a long process of elimination isn't it?

Recurrent thrush can be a sign of diabetes, don't know how this would relate to pregnancy though so sorry probably unhelpful!
