Am looking for ways in cutting down my monthly shop and seem to spend a fortune on sanitary wear...are mooncups worth it? do they leak? I usually use tampons but am pretty heavy for the first 3 days so get through a fair few Blush

All advice and opinions greatly received!

Oh, and if any of you are considering buying a Mooncup, can I ask that you consider using the following link;

www.mooncup.co.uk/wc.php?u=1741

20% of the sale via this link goes to support women's health projects, so please pass this link onto others too.

RamblingRosa · 22/02/2011 11:52

jinxediam don't know if you've bought your mooncup already but, if not, I would recommend you go for the bigger one. I think there are guidelines on the pack but if you're over 30 and/or have given birth, you're meant to go for the bigger one. I don't think there's much in it TBH. I can't imagine you'll find it too big.

Jammygal · 22/02/2011 11:53

Have been using a Mooncup for quite a few years now and find them very good.

I suffer with heavy flow and do find an element of leakage the first few days....but had that with tampons too!
I would never go back......I have some tampon free samples here but never aim to use them as there is no need!
We had dodgy pipes and septic tank in last house and I was proud/glad of the fact I was never flushing sanitary stuff down the system to add to the problem. It really is much more eco girlies ;)

jinxediam · 22/02/2011 16:00

am using up the rest of my tampon stock before making the switch (should be about another 3 days then lol).

Great thanks for the link KashaUK - I'll take the plunge (so to speak!) and order one in for next month. My cycles gone mad and I seem to have a period every 2/3 weeks these days Hmm which is proving expensive!!

ramblingrosa thanks- will look at the that too. I was confused as am 30 and had CS babies, I wasn't sure which size would be better.

I do really like the idea of being more green too without inconvenience.

Cheers ladies for your posts Smile

I kept my leftover tampons in case I have a female guest who needs some.

However... most of those have been used by my cat who has a cylinder fetish and loves tampons the most because when you rip the paper off they have a tail!

lol

jinxediam · 22/02/2011 16:16

Thats so funny- maybe i'll show them to our crazy cat and see what he thinks lol. I can only imagine my mums face tho if she popped round and saw him playing with one Grin

love mine. sometimes need to take it out and put it in again if position is wrong but not hard to rearrange! Wish I'd had jones years ago. Would never use tampons again now. Fantastic little things!

puglet123 · 22/02/2011 21:35

I love mine - bought it 2 months ago. I found it surprisingly easy to get the hang of it and have only leaked once even though I am very heavy for the first 2 days. I am 31 and have had 2 CS but I bought the bigger one and it is fine. I cut all the stalk bit off and found it much more comfortable. Don't knwo whether it is my imagination but I seem to have had less pain in the last two months as well - result Smile

wileycoyote · 22/02/2011 22:35

I nearly yanked my coil out the first time I used mine - like a plunger - ouch - haven't dared use it again since. Any successful coil and mooncup users out there?

Capreece · 23/02/2011 09:15

Um - I have a friend who was told by her Dr (when she had a coil put in) that you shouldn't use the two together...

Not sure whether it would be OK if you were careful to break the seal before removing it, but might be good to talk to your GP?

Mooncups are great I think. I made the mikstake of thinking I could buy the small one though (advised for women with no children). I have three children but did not want to think that I had an enormous vagina! However the small one leaked and had to purchase big...therefore...?

It is great though. No smell and easy to use. Probably not good if you have an aversion to the sight of blood though. They do look like actual blood - much different to on a tampon.

Hope that helps.

CointreauVersial · 03/03/2011 13:37

I bought one a few months back, have no problems getting it in and out, and am getting to grips with the "bloodbath" of emptying. But I do have an issue with leaks.

Unlike tampons, where you get gradual signs that is it full, (brown string, small leaks to start with), I'm finding there is absolutely no warning with the mooncup until suddenly - whoosh - major flood. I certainly can't manage the early days of a period without a towel, and therefore am wondering if I've just swapped one disposable sanitary product for another.

One one memorable occasion I strained on the loo, and it just plopped out by itself. Blush I haven't dared use it overnight either.

But it is good for the last few days when it can be left in for a while.

I might try cutting off the entire stalk, as sometimes I find it is sitting slightly sideways, which may have exacerbated the leaking.

So.....good in parts, but not a roaring success for me, I'm afraid.

RamblingRosa · 03/03/2011 13:58

Sounds like you might have it in a bit wonky cointreauversial. You shouldn't be having major leaks and it shouldn't be sitting sideways.

CointreauVersial · 03/03/2011 20:39

Well, it's not sideways as such (I know I've had three dcs but really.......Grin). Just sometimes it seems a bit off-centre. Maybe it's me that's wonky.

I'll persevere.

SGertie · 03/03/2011 20:54

I love mine but I do sometimes still use tampons if I'm going to be out a lot as emptying it - well I mean cleaning it - in a public loo isn't easy.
At home I always use it as we have a septic tank.

SGertie · 03/03/2011 20:57

I forgot to add I've never leaked with the mooncup correctly positioned. I got the one for over 30's when at the time I was 31 and had one dc.

goodasgold · 03/03/2011 21:10

I would like one, am having a moment of fanny vanity because I have had three dc and am now 34yo myself. How much bigger is the bigger one than the smaller one? Is it milimetres, or centimetres?

I know I need the big one.

SGertie · 03/03/2011 22:19

goodasgold I've just looked up on the mooncup website. The difference in sizes is 3mm.
ROFL at 'fanny vanity'! Have you had a Vajazzle Grin

CointreauVersial · 03/03/2011 22:45

Do they come in XXL?

I think I'm beyond fanny vanity; I clearly have a vajayjay like a bucket, and I don't want the blinkin' thing to keep LEAKING.

goodasgold · 04/03/2011 10:25

Thanks SGertie my fanny and I feel a lot better about ourselves. I am going to buy a mooncup today.

HopeCalvary · 24/09/2013 13:44

Sorry to reanimate an old thread. I like many of you have a small window of time, whilst one is asleep and one watching a film. So sorry if this has been answered on mn.

I have the mooncup size a. had my first ds as waterbirth but tore my bum off and had to have an op two years after as they never gave me a stitch
Second ds was c-section!

I have to change super tampax and towel every hour for a day and a half. Wake up in my owm blood,

HopeCalvary · 24/09/2013 13:45

Stupid phone posted! Long story short. mooncup only cuts change time down by half an hour. changing every hour and a half and that's because i am leaking. two or three times it's looked full the other times it's just over half full. Do you think I need something else? Another brand or keep trying?

Mumfun · 27/02/2014 20:23

Hope ok to resurect again.

There are several cups with more capacity than the mooncup which should work better: MeLuna XL, Yuuki large, Luv Ur Body.
