Antibiotics

My friends baby has bronchilitas (sp) and has been told as he is under 6 months he cant have antibiotics..has anyone else heard this?

Theres no reason he can't have antibiotics purely due to his age but maybe the doc feels its a viral thing or that its resolving well on its own!! I guess its better he fights it himself if poss

There's some more about it here . Bronchiolitis is viral, so antibiotics won't help.

he was very ill early on loosing weight etc, so I would have thought he needed his strength to maintain his weight not fight an infection!

Agree Bronchiolitis is viral (caused by the common cold RSV virus) so doesn't respond to ab's unless there is a secondary bacterial infection. Are you sure she heard the explanation correctly ?

btw it is also very common among babies in their first winter (dd had it at 3 months)and a main cause of hospitalisation of under 1's so does need careful monitoring.
