diaphragm/mirena

Hi

Has anyone ever used a diaphragm as a method of contraception, are they easy to use and reliable. I currently have a mirena in and it is due to come out this summer but I have a suspicion that my depression and mood/low energy is related to the mirena and I was thinking I would like to avoid hormones and chemicals forever. I could get a copper coil in I suppose but dont really want to face another coil insertation. I do want to have more children just not as yet. So please some information or advice about this would be really appreciated. Thanks

Hi
I used a diaphragm...ages ago... but for several years. TBH they are a bit of a hassle, either you put it in every night (hah! some hopes!) or you have to decide, at some point, that you are officially going to DO IT. They are quite easy to use, provided you are OK with your body and have access to bathroom etc...would be hard maybe if you had to share a bathroom...I'm not sure what the reliability is, I guess if pregnancy would be a disaster you might be better withsomething else. OTOH, they have no side effects that I know of.

I used one for several year in between DCs when a PG would not have been a disaster.

They do take away spontanaity unless you are one of those women who use it every night - like cleaning your teeth. Or, if you don't mind hopping out of bed once the action has started.

They are not hard to use but once mine almost got stuck- suction effect!

Reliability is about 95-98% but you have to use spermicide as well and they need re-fitting if your weight goes up or down by half a stone.

It was 25 years back almost though- at the time I waas worried about the pill etc having taken it for a few years but recent research seems to show the pill is very very safe, so it would be my 1st choice if I needed anything.
