Doesnt it give you similar reactions to antabuse if you drink on themn?

pippibluestocking · 11/02/2011 18:12

Because it contains a chemical similar to Antabuse. It will make you very sick! Not a problem with other ABs only metranidazole.

BonjourIvresse · 11/02/2011 18:12

Really bad idea. One of the few antibiotics you really mustn't.

pippibluestocking · 11/02/2011 18:13

MetrOnidazole!

ilovetheshops · 11/02/2011 18:15

because it will make you very sick.had it myself a few mths ago and had the advice not to drink either for 48 hrs after taking last dose.
have heard some stories of friends who just had the "one" and where very very sick.IMO not worth throwing up for even thought I was taking it over my birthday!(vomit phopia)

southeastastra · 11/02/2011 18:29

I made that mistake once southeastastra, (completely forgot for a moment I was on them and had one vodka and diet coke) and I was like a puke sprinkler.

Just my cautionary tale :D

SMJ26 · 12/02/2011 22:54

The combination of metronidazole with alcohol can cause severe abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and headaches.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/02/2011 06:23

Even if it is just a tiny amount of wine. I know. Blardy horrible things, but very effective.

southeastastra · 13/02/2011 18:47

had last one this morning so should i be okay now?

OP posts:
AtYourCervix · 13/02/2011 18:48

nope. still will make you puke badly. need to leave it a couple of days to get out of your system. sorry.

iskra · 13/02/2011 18:52

seriously, it will make you feel SO ill if you drink. it's not scaremongering!

oiwhatsoccuring · 13/02/2011 18:52

it competes with alcohol in the liver to have its by products broken down. they alcohol and the metronidazole that dont get broken down produce very toxic by-products and they can cause death in large quantities.

you shouldnt drink for a few days after taking the course either.

Blu · 15/02/2011 12:26

Metronidazole kills bacteria that thrive without oxygen - anearobically (sp?)- which is why it is used for particular infections such as dental or sti. One of the effects of alcohol on your body is that it makes some of your cells start to function anaerobically - which in turn directs the anti-biotic directly to them to attack them. This makes you ill. (I researched it when I was on it over Xmas Sad)

Kewcumber · 15/02/2011 12:27

stick to chocolate.

alypaly · 15/02/2011 13:37

Metronidazole is believed to have the ability to block the body's breakdown of alcohol, leading to an accumulation of a substance called acetaldehyde in the bloodstream. It is the acetaldehyde toxicity that is detrimental

sleeplessinderbyshire · 15/02/2011 21:11

it takes a few days to get ot of the system as well - I was so so sick when I had one small drink more than 24 hours after taking my last tablet many years ago
