Merina Coil, anyone had any good experiences with it?

My doc has suggested I have this fitted for heavy periods. I've looked on the web and it says all good stuff, but there is another thread on here only with bad news, weight gain, spots, mood swings

Is there anyone out there that has used this coil with no problems. Its a bit hard to make a choice about what to use when I've not seen both sides. Smile

I have had virtually no problems and am very pleased I got it. I too was worried about the negativity Mirena sometimes gets on MN.

The only side effect I have had was a sudden bad depression about a month or so after the insertion. It lasted two weeks, and lifted as quickly as it came.

My periods became much lighter, though I was bleeding on and off for the first few months. Panty liner weight bleeding, not heavy bleeding. Weirdly, I still get PMS, but not the bleeding.

I think peoPle are much less likely to post about positive normality than about unpleasant disappointment.

PrettyCandles · 11/02/2011 15:08

No weight gain, no spots.

anniepanniepears · 11/02/2011 15:15

been great for me to

SardineQueen · 11/02/2011 15:22

From the threads on here a good indictor seems to be, have you used other hormonal contraception ie the pill and how was it for you?

I was on the pill for years and never had side effects, have got mirena now and all is well.

GlynistheGimmer · 11/02/2011 15:53

I had mine fitted in Sept last year, as a replacement for the implant.

So far I've not gained any weight, my periods are extremely light but I certainly have a few more spots.

Definately better (less) side effects that with the implant but not as good as the injection (for me) for stopping periods.

I had my second one fitted last October after an 8 year break (had lots of babies in between Wink). My first experience was very positive and this is too. I can say it has probably saved my marriage. I was on microgynon and my moods on that were horrendous, I had no sex drive and I was getting very down but now I am pretty much back to my normal self. My periods have just settled down, after having my last two children they had been quite heavy. Although the first couple after the Mirena was fitted were heavier than I expected, they were still better than previously. In the last couple of weeks I have had spots but that could be due to stress as we are moving house next week!! Can't comment on weight gain as chocolate & alcohol may play a part in that too!! MaryBS · 11/02/2011 16:10

I had dreadful PMT and very heavy periods. All gone, with no noticeable negative effects

Lulumaam · 11/02/2011 16:12

love it ! on my second one. only downside for me is no periods, so every 3 months or so i convince myself i'm pregnant ! I have a stash of cheap tests now so I can convince myself i'm not

no weight gain,( i've lost 2.2 stone on SW but no discernible weight increase due to coil) no spots, ( well, i always have some!) much more stable mood, first coil had bleeding/spotting for few weeks, second time, had spotting for a week, then nothing, straight back to no periods etc

I could n't recommend it highly enough

TitsalinaBumSquash · 11/02/2011 16:14

I have the Merina.

It wasn't nice being put in but the origional discomfort is worth it for the benifits.

I was having heavy, painfull perionds, I was really quite unwell with them, horrible PMS and other unplesant symptoms.

Now I have a light, painfree period every month, no mood swings, no horrible sweating, hair loss, weight gain, spots. I am really getting on well with it.

McGill · 11/02/2011 16:16

Had a mirena for last 12 years excluding 3 pregnancies and the conception time obviously! Bloomin love them-no side effects and no periods. Prior to that I tried several pills and had awful side effects with them. Go for it! I actually fit them as part of my job and have rarely had anyone come back to get it out-my personal experience is that most women find it a good form of contraception and only get very minimal or no side effects. Worse case scenario-u just get it taken back out again which is very easy.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 11/02/2011 17:17

I'm planning on having one fitted in the next couple of weeks (irregular cycle so I'm to phone the docs as soon as my period starts - can't plan ahead any more accurately).

Do I need to take the day off work for it?

angels3 · 14/02/2011 23:13

Well ladies, thanks for such positive feed back, and its really great to hear such good replies.

I've had problems with the pill - various types, and really not taken it at all, what ever I tried just didnt suit for some reason or another, and I was going for the implant when all the sudden scare came up of unwanted pregs and thats the last thing I need (I'm 44 in a couple of days, and had a MC 12 months ago)

TitsalinaBumSquash - you mention hair loss - on top of everything else (I have UC) and PCOS - I'm hoping you dont mean the hair on your scalp?

I'm waiting for a Drs appt as I seem to have some sort of PID needing to be cleared up (got chickenpox 12 months ago, that caused the MC) and so poss have scarring from that, so need to get that sorted out first...

Feeling a lot more positive about it now. Smile

no weight gain, no spots, great, virtually non-existent periods. but both times I had it fitted I did seem to have a few months of being a bit moody and short-tempered - v. hard to know if it was deinitely the mirena - but it seemed to settle down after a while.

DreamsInBinary · 14/02/2011 23:18

Love mine. No weight gain, skin has not got worse and no moodswings. Also, brilliantly, after the first two months - no periods.

For god's sake rememeber to take three painkillers before you get it fitted, though.

JMHPG - it takes about an hour, including all the questions, and it hurts like hell but you should be fine to work afterwards so long as you are fairly desk-based. Wouldn't recommend a day spent bending/lifting, so if you are a childminder/aerobics instructor/ballet dancer then maybe the day off.

hatwoman · 14/02/2011 23:19

oh - I completely forgot - second time round it was a NIGHTMARE to fit - took 3 appointments and 5 people and it hurt, a lot. but first time round it was absolutely fine. the second time it was only a problem because, apparently, I'm a bit, ahem, wonky inside. Confused

bluejeans · 14/02/2011 23:27

Had one for nearly 5 years and can recommend it - no periods/bleeding at all since about 2 months after fitting Smile

So I'm about to get a replacement one. Can anyone tell me if I'll go through a few weeks of bleeding with the new one like with the first one?

Thanks

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 15/02/2011 08:09

Bugger, I'm not a childminder/aerobics instructor/ballet dancer. I rather fancied getting it fitted in the morning and then going home to sit on the sofa all day til ds gets home from school Grin

BabyBorn · 15/02/2011 08:30

I had severe depression, mood swings, acne, abdominal pains, heart palpitations, anxiety and more when having the mirena coil. I had to perservere with it at i had an episode of dysfunctional uterine bleeding. I had it in for 17 months and all it caused me was health problems and stress. I had it removed last month (thank christ) and am now going through the worry and stress of a possibly cyst, that the mirena has caused. I was scanned regularly and the cyst was not there before the mirena was inserted. It is likely that the mirena has caused this. I would never reccommend anyone having it fitted. Its evil. I wish i had know all of this before i had mine fitted.

BabyBorn · 15/02/2011 08:33

My mother also has it fitted, she is 47, she is on her second, she suffers with heart palpitations with it too, mood swings and slight acne.Dont know why she doesnt have the damn thing removed.

BabyBorn · 15/02/2011 08:39

This might help you decide.

AnnMarlow · 15/02/2011 08:41

Mine has been great - very slight bleeding, no weight gain (since getting it has finally lost last of baby weight), my depression which is always there in the background is generally better, spots about the same ie not many.

Was horrible having it put in and personally wouldn't have been all right going to work afterwards but I think it is better for lots of people.

Mercedes519 · 16/02/2011 09:16

Agree with the fitting but it was worth it.

IMO it depends how you react to progesterone which the Mirena has in it. A lot of the symptoms some people seem to be the same as you'd get the week before your period when this hormone naturally rises. On the Mirena you have this hormone all the time so perhaps this causes the symptoms?

In my case, I have hormone issues and the Mirena has been a godsend, no symptoms, no periods and 5 years before I have to get the bloody thing fitted again!

anniebear · 16/02/2011 10:07

fab! dreading having it removed, dont want to go back to having periods!! Not sure if you can have another put straight in
Best thing I ever did

I think you just have to go for it and see if it works or not for you

angels3 · 01/03/2011 14:21

Well still waiting to have the swabs done, and an investigation to make sure I can have it fitted as I had chicken pox dec 09 and have some scarring 'up there'! Blush

I think I will possibly go with it and I can't see what else I can try now unless I have an hysterectomy?

BabyBorn, at 47 heart palpitations, mood swings and slight acne can also be symptoms of menopause.
