I have not long ago taken up unning, the other day (a weekago I think) I cameback and my calves totally cramped up , real agony but eventually eased. THey have been bothering me since, but tonight I noticed a patch about the size of a babybel (Grin) of blood under the skin, doesn't hurt to touch like a bruise but is where alot of the calf pain is. I it just runners cramp + a bruise.... or something else? Confused

Might be worth calling NHS direct?

Is it hot to touch?

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 06/02/2011 23:02

no...well....it's near the bend in my knee so it's warm there anyway... it's like when you get a bad blood sample taken and you bleed under the skin, all dark red not bruisy.

Sounds very odd!

Might be worth going to the docs tomorrow just to have it checked out...

blinks · 06/02/2011 23:11

sounds like a torn muscle, which can cause bleeding under the skin... rest/ice it.

CrispyCakeHead · 06/02/2011 23:14

could it be a varicose vein that's burst/leaking?

I'd get to the docs sooner rather than later to get it checked out as it's obviously not normal!

I have earache so will go to GP tomorrow, it's really quite sore... I wonder if it is torn abit Confused Shall I try & upload a pic?

http://www.graypearson.com/2007/08/06/look-at-this/ is picture of torn muscle... it often causes such bruising. the recent exercise/cramp is the giveaway.

bruising is just bleeding under the skin and it looks like a bruise, poss from the cramp and exercise which has caused a small tear.

i wouldn't worry about it.

i have what i think is a muscle tear in my quad and it's caused a bloody dent in my leg... i too only started exercising recently so maybe over did it a tad.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 07/02/2011 00:34

I have a 2.4km run tomorrow , hopefully it won't fall off Wink

yikes... try a tubigrip?

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 07/02/2011 00:55

I already wear leggings... when I stop (or even when I run) the muscle goes bananas since last Sunday. I have 2 more sessions left then my trainer leaves (:() so will push through 'til then , then have a good rest I think. It does feel abit torn or pulled or something. Just looking at the blood patch makes me feel all faint Blush

ice it and you really should rest it missus... running on a torn muscle is most daft!

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 07/02/2011 01:10

I don't proper run - more a shuffle jog and walk GrinBlush I'll get him to go easy, maybe change the last session to sit ups/press ups and the like. I am so paranoid I can feel a big blood clot making it's way to my lungs now - I keep checking to make sure the patch isn't moving Grin

i work for nhs24 and bruising isn't a symptom of a leg thrombosis. redness/swelling/hot to touch are main symptoms... often trouble weightbearing.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 07/02/2011 01:19

Ah that's good. I went through the whole thing when pregnant and heartburn rging chestpain - blood tests, leg scans, X-ray, CT machine thing Shock I wonder how I tore it though. Urgh, doesn't bear thinking about. THanks for all your advice by the way :)

a bad cramp can cause tearing alone... if you've been straining it with the exercise, it's more likely to tear.

no bother... night!
