Do i need to go to the doctor?

I have had it once before pre DC's and it floored me for days...it was terrible and this feels just the same. I just want to sleep but can't.

Last time i went to GP and got antibiotics but ive just read that they don't always give antibiotics as it goes away on its own after a few days...what should i do?? Can't cope with the thought of waiting in the surgery...or even driving there.

Am taking co-codamol but it is not relieving the pain...i don't know how im going to do the school run tomorrow and im going to have to cancel DD2's check up at hospital because im just not up to the drive and wait :( (will i get in trouble? It is at 10am tomorrow!) I just know i will cry my eyes out on the phone if they are not happy (rightly so though i know) i never cancel anything but am just so ill :(

Half of DD1's uniform is in the wash and the baby will not settle tonight. What a night.

Sorry for waffling, do i need antibiotics do you think?? Or wait it out? I can hardly swallow, feel terrible.

generally with tonsillitis. if symptoms don't ease within a few days, antibiotics are appropriate.

25goingon95 · 03/02/2011 10:07

Thanks blinks, i have been up all night in agony so managed to get an emergency appointment at 9am. Dr has given me antibiotics but said to give it another day or so before taking them. I really am in agony though and have just been sick :( So throat is even worse now!!

Im tempted to go get the antibiotics and start them. I feel terrible.

OP posts:
blinks · 03/02/2011 12:47

i would take them personally...

25goingon95 · 03/02/2011 13:13

DH went to get them for me. I have taken 2 just now..I was sick again and my throat is very swollen, i was choking on my tonsils while being sick Shock

Im panicking now, DH says it shouldn't swell more but who knows?? :(

OP posts:
25goingon95 · 03/02/2011 14:31

Sorry, me again, does anyone know how long it should take for penicillin to kick in and take some swelling down?

Im desperate for some relief of this and alone in the house with baby DD...roll on 6pm when DH gets home.
Only another 3+half hours :(

blinks · 03/02/2011 15:59

poor you... vomiting less usual with tonsillitis but can happen.

if you can swallow your own saliva and have no breathing difficulties, you should continue taking antibiotics alongside paracetemol with ibuprofen (unless you have asthma)... plenty fluids/ice lollies etc if the symptoms get worse you might need to be seen again incase you need more aggressive antibiotic treatment.

try to stagger the paracetemol/ibuprofen so you get maximum relief.

tis piss!

25goingon95 · 03/02/2011 17:11

Thankyou blinks. It sure is grim.

I think i do need to drink more as im having symptoms of dehydration now but it is just such agony to swallow...I have eaten only 2 of the DC mini yogurts all day :( I am hungry though, may try to get some soup down me later.

Only one hour until DH gets home...sigh.

You know that dangly thing at the back of your throat, not sure of its name, but that is huge and long now and that is what is sometimes blocking my throat and making me panic!! Horrid horrid horrid. :(

Thanks for coming back with advice blinks :)

I'm right there with you! OMG, it hurts like hell!

Go get the ABs and take them! Fuck waiting for it to go away.

I'm on my 2nd day of antibiotics and just now feeling not like death, but am still weak.

I got a terrible fever with mine, my right ear is also infected, and the fever has seriously weakened me. Swallowing with that ear and the tonsilitis was nigh on impossible without amazing pain, so I got a stonking headache from dehydration.

Like you, I took co-codamol and it didn't tough the pain. I found some Voltarol and that helped.

I'll be slamming that tonight.

That, 'Take ibuprofen and paracetomol' is bullshit.

So is telling someone to drink a lot when swallowing is absolute agony.

Take the meds and I hope you feel better soon.

25goingon95 · 03/02/2011 17:26

Ah thanks expat. It is bloody agony isn't it. Sorry you are suffering as well.

I got my antibiotics, took my first 2 and promptly threw up!! Can you imagine the agony of throwing up when throat is so so sore...ive been sick twice up to now :( arghhhh i had to lie on the floor due to the pain taking over...

So im due my 2nd couple of tablets in an hour and am praying i'll be a little better tomorrow.

Hope you feel better soon too expat

expatinscotland · 03/02/2011 17:28

Try sucking on some ice before you take your tablets, 25.

I'm sorry you're suffering. It well and truly sucks.

This fever is dire.

25goingon95 · 03/02/2011 17:34

Thanks, will try that.

Just want DH to get home now, my poor baby DD has been an angel all day, i can hardly talk to her.

Hope you manage to get some sleep tonight, dose yourself up. I didn't sleep a wink last night.

expatinscotland · 03/02/2011 17:38

it's hell when you have kids to look after, too.

DH has been on evenings but did have to take a whole day off yesterday i was so ill.

i hope you get some rest, too.

i'm going to load up on pain meds because last night my fever kept coming and going so i hardly slept.

ds has been ill, too, with a cough that causes him to vomit.

so it's been a hellish couple of weeks here with some dire virus doing the rounds.

25goingon95 · 03/02/2011 17:43

Oh no, sounds awful. My DD1 is coughing too. Hoping they don't catch this. It is such hard work being ill with DC around. Ive only just managed to drag myself into the kitchen to make DD's meals today. Thankfully a really nice mum at school, DD's friend's mum, said DD could go to theirs for tea so i haven't had to do the school run or make tea. I am so grateful to her!

My DH couldn't take today off but did arrange to go in later so he could do the school run and get me to the doctor. He is off tomorrow which is great, i will be able to rest up and try to get better for our busy weekend.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 03/02/2011 17:48

it's the worst, having wee ones when you are ill.

i hope you get a lot of rest.

go and make you some ice.

25goingon95 · 03/02/2011 17:50

Thanks expat, am off to do just that.

Hope you feel a little better tomorrow!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 03/02/2011 17:52

you, too! :)

Samedi · 03/02/2011 17:53

Whatever happens, keep up with the anti-biotics and drink as much water as humanly possible. My last 4 bouts of tonillitis ended with me in hospital overnight on a drip due to dehydration, and once with a quincy which was the worst hell ever, just ever. I can't even tell you how they dealt with that one, some people are bad with needles!

Tonsilectomy=best thing ever!

Thanks samedi, am trying to keep up the fluids..certainly don't want to end up in hospital!

Lulabella thanks, i may send DH out for some but am afraid it will make me gag and then sick again..i swear i will choke to death on my own swollen tonsils if i am sick again!! Came close last time!

DH and DD1 home at last, ive tried and failed to get soup down me. Have taken antibiotics again and so am off to bed i think.

Hate this :(

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 03/02/2011 19:03

Use ice and ice chips to keep your fluids topped up now.

You can even make your own rehydration fluid and freeze that to keep from getting dehydrated.

I love all these docs who say, 'Drink lots of fluids' to someone who can't swallow without intense pain from the swelling and inflammation, and then 'Take paracetemol'. Yeah, that fucking helped a lot, that's why I'm here, you nimrod.

Get your DH to get your some ice lollies made with fruit juice.

expatinscotland · 03/02/2011 19:04

I've wound up in hospital for dehydration twice (but from dysentery whilst in a foreign country once and from giardia another time) and it's very, very unpleasant.

25goingon95 · 04/02/2011 07:42

well, ive been using the ice cubes. they cooled my throat down but it was so hard to swallow the water. the cold helped to numb it a little though.

i had a better sleep, got up to take antibiotic at midnight and 6am. dont feel like death so much at the moment but throat still the same. got up to make DD's packed lunch and sort uniform out but feel very weak so came straight back to bed after that. so lucky DH is off today.

how are you expat? hope you are a little better today. your experience of being in hospital with dehydration in a foreign country sounds hideous! can't even imagine what that must have been like!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 04/02/2011 14:31

little better today but still quite weak. i'm surprised how weak this made me! must be getting old.

my throat still hurts, too, but i went and got some antiseptic spray.

25goingon95 · 04/02/2011 16:40

im glad you are a little better expat.
i was just saying to DH i can't believe how weak i feel with this! i did a couple of chores earlier and had to have a lie down! also managed a shower and again had to have a rest afterwards!

i seem to be a bit better though, have managed some chicken soup and 2 pints of water! :) hoping im on the mend now.
