Any tip on avoiding toe joint pain when exercising?

I am bigger than I should be and have been a member og a health club for 3 years without shifting the weight. I have had all the induction courses and at various times used it more or less.Ds2 has just started school full time so I thought right, get down the gym and get stuck in.

My problem is that my second toe on my right foot seems to hurt (sting even, at its base/ball on my foot) when I do exercise such as running or cross training.

I warm up other muscels but cant think of what I can do for my toe.

I tried Google on my symptoms as the painful toe has been happening on long walks etc(especially if the ground is stoney)since the summer hols. From what I can work out I may have strained it or have arthritis !! (only37).

Any one any good tips, products I could take/use.

Bought new trainers yesterday actually but not terribly expensive. How would I recognise a pair of cross trainers?

My dad has arthritis, it's too bad now for anything to work for him and he's waiting for joint replacements, but before it got this bad he used to swear by high doses of glucosamine with chondroitin. He tried Devil's Claw for a while as well, which was reasonably effective but not good enough for him to stick with.

Would you get that from a health food shop or a doctor?

You can get it from most chemists as well as health food shops.
