Wisdom Teeth : (

Over the years I have had all four of my wisdom teeth coming through, they tend to stop and start.

However for the past two days one has started to come through again and has caused my cheek to swell and my gum is in peices.

I am using painkillers and orajel - but the latter is making me feel so ill!

Any suggestions whatsoever are incredily welcome.

Thanks : )

Depending on what painkillers you've taken, and when, my dad swears by half an aspirin pushed between your cheek and the tooth. Having had wisdom tooth trouble myself, you may be too painful to manage this. Clove oil? My dentist gave me a syringe and blunt needle so I could flush under the gum with Corsodyl. I think you should see yours - but in the meantime loads of mouthwashing with saline or Corsodyl will help.

Hello, me again. I am on a crusade to answer dental problems.

DO NOT put aspirin in your cheek. just don't do it, I see chemical burns (yes really) every month from this. WOuld you put aspirin in your ear for earache? Didn't think so. Seriously, don't do it please.

You need to (you may well be already): Keep the area clean clean clean, have a dig around under the gum with your toothbrush, give up smoking (generic, you probably don't) and also go to your dentist. NICE guidelines state that you must have had an infection needing antibiotics, twice, around the same tooth, within 12 months, to be able to have the tooth out.

We can normally predict whether the tooth will erupt and all the problems will go away or whether the probs will hang around. Please go and see them!!!

I have written a long article about this on dooyoo, google dooyoo wisdom teeth and it's the first link (I won't get any £ unless you are a member so don't think it's for my retirement fund please!)

Any Q's I would be delighted to help.

PS Forget the aspirin.

Oh thanks for enlightening me about the aspirin thing - wow Shock

I should know better than to take any sort of medical advice from my dad. This being the man who didn't see a doctor for 9 years!

Thanks so much for this! After a few days it is starting to calm down a bit! (I have however booked in with the dentist anyway!)

I have a quick question... they have been coming through now for years and whilst they haven't been particularly painful (apart from this time) I wonder whether this is normal? As they are all around half way out of the gum?

Thanks

Very variable I'm afraid. Some people have one horrendous episode of problems then nothing, other people have nothing for years and then problems. I think they reach crisis point sometimes and can then get stuck there!
