Pain when I cough?

Evening all!

I've had a streaming cold for 4 days now with a cough, sore throat and headache. I have started to feel a kind of pain in the back of my chest when I cough. No pain when I take a deep breath though.
Anyone know if this is anything or just part of the cold?

I can't take much because I'm 36 wks pg. Have been taking paracetomol before bed to help me sleep.

I've had what's called intercostal muscle pain a few times after having a really bad cough. It basically feels a bit like a boken rib and starts off hurting when you cough and if the cough gets no better it ends up hurting when you breath Sad

It's not serious in itself (I think it's kind of like a pulled muscle) and will go away in time once your body has a rest from coughing. Ibuprofen is the best thing to take for it, but ask your GP first given that you're heavily pg!!

DEFINITELY make an appointment with your GP ASAP to check whether you have a chest infection and need antibiotics, you don't want this dragging on after the baby is born. I speak from experience... I had a horrible cough for weeks before DS1 was born and ended up on steroid tablets the week before the birth. After the birth I still had the cough and intercostal pain, which did not combine well with the stitches for my bad tearing and horrendous latching on pain with breastfeeding Sad Sad.... So the moral of the story is see your GP tomorrow and get it sorted!!

Could be muscular or could be pleurisy - - inflammed lung lining - which would probably need antibiotics to clear it. I had it a few months ago - following a bad cold/cough - was sorted quickly but you need to go to the GP.

Thanks both - called GP who didn't seem very concerend (not my GP as he is not in today) but said to call back on Monday if I still have it. It's about the same today - definately not worse and have been coughing up a lot of gunk so I guess that's a good thing (yuk!)

That's good PDR Smile I'd definitely insist to see someone if things are no better by monday though, as I mentioned before you def want rid of the cough before giving birth. Coughing puts strain on the muscles ''down there'' if you see what I mean and is absolute agony if you have any tears that are trying to heal (speaking from experience!!) on the plus side I have often thought that my bad cough temporarily weakened my pelvic floor muscles and that was what contributed to DS1 coming a week early Grin

Freddo my pelvic floor muscles were weak before the cough so you can only imagine what they're like with it Blush Hopefully the baby might just fall out on its own Wink!!!!
