Im really struggling with this whole diet thing. DS has been dairy free all his life so no worries there but the gluten has been a nightmare. We get no funding as his markers are negative so we are on our own with it. Need ideas of foods desperately, especially as I am supposed to go gf as well as I am bfeeding, I b*y hate the food so far (am also a vege but am back on dairy after an 11mth df diet)
Have found a gf porridge ds will eat, is this enough, can he have it day after day, is it as filling as "normal" porridge?
He will sometimes eat rice cakes and rice crackers but is pretty unpredictable with them
He will eat one of the gf bar things. He will sometimes eat cold meats but wont touch anything cooked unless it has crumbs, are the gf ones any good?
Struggling with this so much. Dr said to go for one gf meal a day to start with and then go from there. THis week ds has started to have very loose smelly naps with bits of food in them, not sure if this is just run of the mill grotty botty or the gluten.
Thanks from a super stressed yowling monster.

Just to confirm that it's just gluten and casein - if I make something that fits your requirements (and Bob's) for Wednesday.

Should be able to do something better than rice cakes!

yes bb to gluten, Saac is completely dairy free so whey etc as well as casien. I have reintroduced dairy into my diet and it doesnt seem to have been a problem that I can see.

Are we going to take food with us or eat b4 and after,
So far I have come up with:
Pottle of diced ham, tom and cucumber for S and B if B can have these
GF apple/cinnamon bar (will check for egg)
Pkt mixed dried fruit

and gf ef pikelets that you mentioned you had a mix for.

Ah the pikelets - I remember now - I'll bring some made up, they travel quite well. Can I make them with soy milk?

Bob doesn't do preservatives so that's ham out, but don't worry I'll bring his lunchbox for him, and then take the pikelets to my Shetland Pony friend.

I've just made some yummy kumara and sweetcorn patties. Microwaved kumara in a little water and mashed. Softened some onions and garlic in rice bran oil. Added some frozed sweetcorn, and a little cumin. Then tossed the little patties in a mixture of millet and fine cornmeal before frying. They could fit your ds's version of crumbed and because of all that rice bran oil they are quite high in good fat. They are quite brittle as I had to make them, but if you made them with an egg I think they would keep well.

soy milk is fine, where do you get rice bran oil from, does it flavour the food or can you pretty much use it for anything, the patties sound like something he might have a go at. Have you experimented with riceflour or freedom flour at all, I have a muffin recipe that has no eggs in and might be ok if those flours would work.

Freedom flour is fanstastic as is the Orgran. Rice flour I found too thin to do much with, except thicken runny stuff.

The rice bran oil has no preservatives, has it's own antioxidants and tastes of nothing. It has a massively high smoke point so is fantastic for pikelets etc. i love olive oil and again no preservatives, but I don't want all my cooking to taste like olives.

BTW I think your ds can have the same porridge every day if he will eat it. Ds went through a 6 month weetbix phase (with water!) and is now on a toast phase. I realise your ds can have neither of these things, but it does demonstrate how kids don't mind.

Oh sorry i forgot - I get rice bran oil from Fresh Choice, but I'm sure they sell at Woolworths too.

Do you want me to bring any supplies from the big city?

yowlingmonster · 09/10/2005 08:40

Thanks but dh still works in town so is able to grab things on his way through. Makes it sound as though we live out in the wopwops!! Looking forward to seeing you guys.
