worry, worry, worry...

Just need to get some of my worrying out of my system, so thought I'd start a thread...!

ds2's got a big lump on the back of his neck and it's been there for about 2 months now. It came up when he last had a bad cold which turned into an infection and the GP said it was a swollen gland. He got better after antibiotics but the lump didn't go down.

We're taking him to the GP tomorrow morning, and I'm sure it's just that the gland hasn't gone down yet, but I'm still worrying it's something more sinister...

I thought glands only got swollen when you've actually got a cold, etc. - that's why I'm worrying, because it's not gone away.

Stop worrying dot1,DS1 had one a few years back for ages and ages. Ended up going to hospital and doc there not at all worried. DS1 had antibiotics eventually and the lump went. It's very common with young kids. How old is he?

Think I remember them saying something about kids getting bugs so often the lymph can stay like that for ages?

My next door neighbours son has a lump on the sid eof his neck that the docters say is the same thing. He has had it for about 2 years now. It doesn't bother him but I know his mum worries like you.

It's a lumph gland dot.. they can remain 'up' for weeks on end. See the doc for reassurance but try to stop panicking. Been there done that!

aww - thanks! I know it's silly and I haven't even mentioned to dp how worried I am - but sitting here typing this there's tears everywhere..!

I can totally understand how you feel Dot. My DS1 has the same thing. Been there for about a year now. Gets bigger from time to time. But it is just a gland. will go eventually.

do see the GP though for reassurancce.

My DS2 has a lump in the front of his neck, and even I could tell it was more serious than DS1. When I saw my GP he instantly said it was different and arranged a hospital referral imediately.

Be reassured that if your GP says it is a swollen gland it probably just is.

((((hugs)))) Dot. I know how worrying these things can be.. but really, don't panic about this. There is only cause for concern if the lymph gland goes on growing and growing which is seriously unlikely. It may stay up for ages now because the cold season is now arriving (is it ever! sniff! ).. but it's only a sign that DS's body is dealing with lingering germs as immune systems are supposed to.

Took ds to the doc's today and she had a good old feel of his lump, consulted another GP and then told me they thought it was fine, but to bring him back every 4 - 6 weeks to get it checked out while it's still there! Bit of a palaver - if it's OK now, why wouldn't it be OK in 4 weeks time?!

that's really interesting 'cos ds has mild eczema/asthma and I've got all sorts of auto-immune disorders (which I mentioned at the appt today), so maybe it's all linked...

ds has one at the back of his neck - sort of where his head meets his neck. I think this is a lymph gland. His has been swollen for about 3 yrs now (first noticed it after his first MMR jab). GP is not bothered as it's not getting any bigger and sometimes it does seem smaller.

I don't think it's anything to worry about although my friend's dd (age 5) is having a minor op on hers to do a biopsy just to make sure it's nothing sinister (though I think this is largely because friend lost her dad through a very nasty strain of cancer and is paranoid about any lump).

Hi dot glad GP was thorough. It sounds like it is ok, but they just want to check it does go down in 4 - 6 weeks time. Try not to worry during this time. Easy for me to say, I know, but try to be reassured. Keep us posted.
