The dc's and I are all ill with a cold/sore throat, dh is away. We're muddling through, I'm probably the worse one, luckily they are being brilliant.

I've obviously got a fever because I'm shivering even though I'm dressed, under the duvet on the sofa. When I take ibruprofen the fever goes and I feel a bit more human for the first couple of hours, but by hours three and four I feel terrible. Can I take paracetamol and ibruprofen alternating every two hours or is it still four? I don't have any paracetamol, but have calpol so could take that for myself.

Sorry, if this post isn't too clear it's taking all my effort to type.

You can take 800mg of ibuprofen at a time which may help. It's best to leave 4 hrs between paracetamol and ibuprofen otherwise you may take too much paracetamol. Make sure you have no more than 8 in 24 hrs. Hope you feel better soon.

Am in no way medically trained or anything, but I seem to remember being told by my GP once that you can take paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time.

1234ThumbScrew · 07/01/2011 15:39

I have some vague memory of that too Madonnaw but don't want to overdo it.

I was just about to post the same thing...I have sinusitis and I took 400mg Neurofen 2 hours ago...it's tkaen the worse edge off but still hurts like mad.

I was debating now taking 2 Panadols now to see if that would help as I've got another hour and half at work and feel like death Confused

Hope you're better soon ThumbScrew

Yes, you can take them together, or space them 2 hrs apart. I would not recommend taking 800mg of ibuprofen at a time, 400mg is the safe recommended dose, every 6-8 hrs. No more than 1200mg (3x 400mg) is the safe dose of ibuprofen, and you would be risking renal problems if you took more.

Paracetamol is 2x 500mg tabs every 4 hrs, no more than 8 tablets in 24 hrs.

They are different drugs so are totally safe to take them together.

Im a nurse btw. get well soon

Valpollicella · 07/01/2011 15:52

Thank you so much Sukie, much appreciated. I can barely think straight because of the pain I'm still in so off for a couple of Panadols

Catfordian · 07/01/2011 16:08

You have to be careful because there's paracetamol in ibuprofen.

hth

Valpollicella · 07/01/2011 16:12

Really? In Neurofen?

jade80 · 07/01/2011 16:17

No there isn't, Catfordian.

Yes take them alternately every 2 hours.

Hope you feel better soon.

DaisySteiner · 07/01/2011 16:17

There's no paracetamol in ibuprofen, two totally different drugs.

TrillianAstra · 07/01/2011 16:21

Ibuprofen and paracetamol are completely different things, there is nothing in ibuprofen apart from ibuprofen.

They do not interact in a bad way, you can take a full dose of both at the same time.

topsi · 07/01/2011 17:46

you can take them together at the reccomended doses. Be careful with the paracetamol as too much is very dangerous! Don't forget lemsip etc contains paracetamol.

SeaShellsDreamingOfSummer · 07/01/2011 17:53

Check the products you have- like ponsi says, lemsip has paracetamol so that counts towards your paracetamol dose.

(paracetamol and ibuprofen are the names of the active drug, calpol and nurofen are product names)

You can take them together, but the idea behind spacing them/alternating is that you don't go for 6-8 hours between doses, thus avoiding a couple of uncomfortable hours aa the potency decreases.

SeaShellsDreamingOfSummer · 07/01/2011 17:56

Sorry topsi!! I don't know what I typed for autocorrect to change it to that!!

LIZS · 07/01/2011 17:59

Be careful Boots have just brought out a combined paracetomol/iburprofen here which is packaged very similar to Nurofen Hmm

Tangchi · 07/01/2011 17:59

You can take 2 together def def no paracetamol in ibuprofen hope you feel well soon

scrappydappydoo · 07/01/2011 18:01

If you can get out or get someone to go out for you can I recommend Sudafed for sinus pain - I found it was the only thing that helped.
Also someone here enlightened me about night nurse which is great stuff (although obviously don't take with sudafed)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2011 18:08

when one of us is poorly enough to be taking lots of meds at different times I try and do a bit of a drugs chart - write down what was taken when. Otherwise it is really easy to lose track.

hope you feel better soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2011 18:09

oops.

Catfordian · 07/01/2011 19:53

The pharmacist in Boots told me exactly that, there's paracetomal in ibuprofen. Last week!

How strange. Confused

Catfordian · 07/01/2011 21:02

If you have Dave on freeview tune in now. Ben Elton in hometown of Catford lol

shellye · 07/01/2011 22:18

My husband is a doctor. His advise is no one should be taking 800mg of ibuprofen at one go! There is absolutely no paracetamol in Ibuprofen! He deals with chronic and acute pain every day, it is his job. He is now fuming about the pharmacist in Boots! Doesn't take much to wind him up about pharmacists!

CountessVonKnackerstein · 07/01/2011 22:23

I am sure you can take 2 paracetamol and then 2 hours later take 2 ibuprofen. That's what I take when I get mega migraines.

Catfordian · 08/01/2011 00:10

Shellye - oh dear!

Sorry for posting last post on wrong thread too Blush
