Gastro is the stomach sort of area

Oncology is normaly cancer isnt it?

KristinaM · 04/10/2005 20:29

Dont worry, its nothing to do with cancer! Its gastroenterologist, a consultant who specialises in problems to do with the digestive system. I know its worrying but better to have DT2 seen by an expert. Is it as Yorkhill? ( Royal Hospital for Sick Children). They are very good. Try not to worry

jambuttie · 04/10/2005 20:30

no no its fine. You just got the name wrong. My DSS was seen at both hospitals and they are first class. Some of the top doctors in the country.

KristinaM · 04/10/2005 20:42

Do you have the name of the consultant he has ben refrred to? Then you can check it out online

here

NannyL · 04/10/2005 20:48

agh sorry,,, you meant a gastroENTEROLOGIST, not a gastroONCOLOGIST.

the first is nothing to do with cancer

Definition of Gastroenterologist

Gastroenterologist: A physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and biliary system.

Gastroenterologist is just that - someone who looks at all thing Gastric - stomach, digestion things like that - all types of problems but not cancer - dd saw one when they were having problems diagonising her food allergies for instance, and they sedatated her and put a tiny camera into her stomach through her mouth (it was on the end of a very small plastic lead) they also do biopsies - take small scrapings from the stomach lining for instance to analyse. Sorry that it wasn't explained to you when you went but hopefully they will be able to diagnose his problems with weight gain and get him sorted out, poor chap.

Hope you get sorted soon - they may do an endoscopy on him too to see whats going on so at least you will know what it means

Good luck

Have spoken with appt's at edinburghs sick kids who were lovely and t/f me to gastro secretary who said no refferal has been recieved yet but to have an appt you will wait months ]

I advised her they were putting it as urgent and she said she was on has just returned from holiday and maybe ent secretary who would arrange refferal is on holiday too.

still no further forward and wee might is eating less. He also failed his assesment again and has been reffered to special needs development centre for further work

Jambuttie, All sounds very similar to my DD, She frequently choked on her food and was failure to thrive, we saw a gastroenterologist at 18 months who ordered a vidoefluroscopy which showed DD had severe reflux, when she started on the medicines for it she doubled in weight although she still has problems with solids but improving all the time.

We were told we could wait months, but I pestered the secretary so much she gave us a cancellation so we only waited about a month.

jambuttie · 22/11/2005 10:56

Have appt finally through for 29th November

Had to push the issue though
