Has anyone had a larynx problem (persistent laryngitis or other) and successfully found a doctor interested enough to look at it?

I have had 12 bouts of laryngitis in 12 months. 2 times, my larynx got so irritated that it started going into spasm which stopped me being able to breathe and I thought I was going to die! Luckily the episodes were over v quickly and once I realised what they were, I stopped panicking.

But it's clearly a weak point for me.

I went to the GP for the first 2 instances and was told in both cases it was viral. I went on the 7th incidence and was told it was viral. I get reflux aswell but they won't prescribe omeprazole permanently (apparently they don't anymore) so when I suggested it might be reflux laryngitis I got a shrug of the shoulder and a maybe.

I went to the doc today as I have ear pain and need to fly somewhere next week. He looked at my ear and said it is referred pain as my ear is fine (this happens every time I get laryngitis) but I insisted on antibs this time as I tend to get far worse when I fly in this condition and I can't always get medical treatment easily when abroad.

I saw an ENT last year who had lost his bendy scope thing so couldn't look in my nose or down my throat at my larynx but concluded from a cat scan of my sinuses that I didn't have chronic sinusitis and there was nothing wrong with me. This was without even looking at my larynx. So as far as the GP is concerned, there is nothing wrong.

Who can I go to from here?

Tbh, it's not like I'm dying but it is v v annoying and it's like my throat is permanently swollen now!

Sorry fox, I don't know but I'm interested because, frankly, you sound like me! I haven't had the investigations, but i have the long-standing scratchy throat, reflux, etc. It is getting on my nerves!!!!!

lol cakes, I know what you mean

I feel I haven't had any investigations of my throat as no-one has ever bloody looked at it!

I do know, when I take omeprazole, it does get better but apparently I can't take that all the time! I'm not sure it will fix it permanently anyway, but then again, I've never tried.

do you take any meds for the reflux?

The only thing i take is Gaviscon, and only at night. I think it helps as well. But all to often I forget to take it.

I think mine is worse at the moment because i have a bit of post-viral drip (charming name) following a heavy cold. Sometimes my throat feels so tight. Yuk.

I am loath to go to the GP's again: I seem to have lived in medical places over the last year or two (nothing to do with this, but still, enough's enough)
